Yet another tool for Personal Safety
In keeping safe at home and on the go, there are more ways than one to go about it. Of course, as much as I recommend using any tool that is legally at your disposal, I believe that there is always a need for self defense training. Self defense training or martial arts training go hand in hand with weapons training, in my humble opinion.
We’ve talked about pepper spray and how the new gel is the bomb, almost literally! The tool I want to talk about today is the personal alarm. Carrying a personal alarm can be the most effective way to increase personal safety for one key reason: there is absolutely no harm done in setting off an alarm!
You may ask what good is that? In some ways, I totally agree. But look at it from this standpoint: your child cannot carry pepper spray to school. If you’re not sure why, just look back and read my post about the middle-school pair who were arrested because pepper spray accidentally went off in a backpack. Pepper spray is great in the majority of instances; but clearly not all.
Personal alarms are convenient to carry in backpacks, on key chains, and even in pockets. Some personal alarms feature flashlights and some are super compact. What they all are is loud – to the tune of about 120 decibels. If you’ve never had to endure 120 decibels, you should try it sometime! The term “ear splitting” was coined because of sounds this loud. Needless to say, the noise emitted from a personal alarm is uncomfortable.
Now, I still say that every man, woman and child can benefit greatly from martial arts training; self defense training, combat training, etc. Each of us holds the key to our own health and welfare; our own safety. To train is one thing; to learn is another.
You train in self defense to learn punches and kicks that will get you away from an attacker. But there is still more learning to be done outside of the physical training. This is where you gain information on awareness, mental skills and weapons (or tools, I like to call them). A personal alarm is the ideal personal safety tool for children; but can also be carried by any adult. Even if you carry pepper spray, it makes sense to add yet another line of defense to your safety tool kit.
