The True Value of Self Defense Training
We always extol the great benefits of self defense training in the obvious ways. Personal protection is indeed a very important factor to a long and happy life. Because I have been affected by crime in a personal way, I will always believe that this is the first and foremost benefit of learning combat self defense (or Jiu-Jitsu or Kenpo or any fighting techniques!). However, there are other benefits to self defense training and I wanted to take a moment to make you familiar with them.
Looking at statistics, you will quickly see that you have a far more likely chance of being killed by something other than a violent assault. According to the CDC, homicide ranks pretty low on the list of common causes of death.
“The 15 leading causes of death in 2007 were:
1. Diseases of heart (heart disease)
2. Malignant neoplasms (cancer)
3. Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke)
4. Chronic lower respiratory diseases
5. Accidents (unintentional injuries)
6. Alzheimer’s disease
7. Diabetes mellitus (diabetes)
8. Influenza and pneumonia
9. Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis (kidney disease)
10. Septicemia
11. Intentional self-harm (suicide)
12. Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis
13. Essential hypertension and hypertensive renal disease (hypertension)
14. Parkinson’s disease
15. Assault (homicide)”
Now, even though homicide ranks low on the list of causes of death, that doesn’t mean that there is no longer a need for individuals to go through a good self defense training program. In fact, the point I’m making with this post is that training in combat self defense, or martial arts, or any other form of self defense training gives you both the benefit of being able to defend yourself and also gives you the benefit of combating any one of the lifestyle diseases that ranks among the top causes of death.
I remember reading an article a few years ago that stated any individual has a 20 times greater chance of being killed by disease than by another person. Can you increase your health through regular exercise? Absolutely. I would never claim that the road to optimal health is through self defense training. But what I will say is that if you can increase your health and your personal safety through a complete combat self defense program; or through a martial arts defense program; why not kill two birds with one stone?
