Thai Pads
If you’re starting your own martial arts or self defense school or simply looking to start training on your own you need Thai pads. Used in many martial arts as a way to training hand, elbow, and leg strikes and fills the gap between focus mitts and the heavy bag. Originally created for Thailand’s national sport Muay Thai or Thai boxing to take the sports brutal kicks they have become an invaluable tool for martial artists. They’re small and when held properly you will slide their hand between the two grips with your hand holding the top two of the grips with your palm facing out. The pad will cover your hand and forearm and cushion any strikes that you might take from your training partner. Though traditionally black these pads can be found in a rainbow of colors, but are usually black leather.
Though its popularity has grown thanks largely to Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) the sport form that we now know today was derived from Lerdrit which was taught to the Royal Thai Army centuries ago. Constant attacking, kicks, knees, locking, grappling and elbows are all major concepts in Lerdrit though an open hand was used. In a match the two fighters battle for five rounds that are 3 minutes each. There is a 2 minute break between each round and if there is any stopping during the round it will not be counted as part of the round.
You have to remember though that it is a sport which is brutal, but still regulated. In Thai Boxing opponents are always coming at you straight on with rules prohibiting many moves including wrestling on the ground. This can bring an end to a Muay Thai fighter’s deadly assault once they are taken down. Also there are no defenses to weapons. In a street fight there is much more to the fight then hit and get hit back.
There are an endless number of drills you can do with Thai pads and a partner. You can practice any striking martial art with them from traditional Muay Thai kickboxing to Japanese Jujutsu. You get used to hitting and hitting a target hard. You need to learn to strike or it doesn’t matter what else you can do well. You learn hot to strike you have learned an important of self defense. So practice your punches, kicks, edge of hand strikes and when someone comes at you treat them like a Thai pad.
