Sword Martial Arts
The sword is an elegant and simple weapon that can take a life time to master, but end the life of an enemy in seconds. As sharp blade in the hands of a skilled warrior can change the course of an empire, it was the ultimate weapon in close combat for centuries. It is a work of art and can take a life. Many people wish to study this weapon and though they’re as popular as they once were a dedicated group of practitioners continue to practice and teach sword martial arts. The principals taught by sword fighting are invaluable regardless what style or weapons system you used in combat.
When you mention sword martial arts often times people think of two fully armored samurai fighting it out in a dramatic fashion. Well, that is one part of it, but many cultures have systems for blade combat. The samurai with their shinnying katanas of coarse practiced an impressive form of sword martial arts along with their combat training. That training continues in modern day through kendo where warriors use padded armor and wooden training swords to create battlefield conditions. There is some training with real swords and bamboo and rice stocks are used to simulate flesh and bone. In Europe and the world fencing remains popular and there are people still practicing fighting styles that date back toe the Renaissance. In the Philippians swords are used as part of Eskrima along with knives and other weapons and draws from both tribal fighting styles and European fencing.
Sword martial arts are all about taking ground and doing as much damage as possible without getting injured yourself. These are good tactics in any fighting style because it doesn’t give your attacker time to put up an effective defense. Like with any martial art it is all about trying survive through skill so simply having a sword isn’t enough. You have to know how to wield it effetely not just against another opponent with a sword, about also against those who might come after you with a bat or other weapon they find handy. If you’re going to count on the sword for protection you have to learn how to use the weapon hanging on your wall. Since you can’t carry your sword everywhere you would like in our modern “civilized” you can only really count on it for home protection so it is in your best interest that you learn an alternative form of self defense until your able to use your blade.
