Styles of Martial Arts

Styles of martial arts can be broken down into three simple categories. While this might sound simple a little research will show you how it is true. One group of styles are the self defense ones where you do whatever you use practical moves to survive a life or death fight. Another group is the cultural fighting arts which are usually ancient fighting styles that showcase the ways of the past. The last group is probably the best know and largest group. Sport combatives are meant to look and feel like actual combat, but points systems and rules keep them from being deadly. You just need to pick the style that is right for you.

One of the first things a student must do in their search is research. Resources are abounding on the Internet and in books at your local library. This will let you sort through the hype and get to the history. There is a persistent myth that all martial arts styles are a product of ancient wisdom and are time tested. This not the cases with many styles like Yoseikan which takes many elements from more established styles like Judo and Jujutsu and others and has become its own style. You also have to keep in mind that many martial arts might have been very impressive, but unless they’re still being practiced in their traditional form they could be completely useless. If your going to compete in mixed martial arts you don’t need a style that has a lot of mediation, but you will need plenty of striking and ground work.

With so many styles of martial arts out there an overview is necessary before taking the next step. Why do you want to accomplish by learning this style? Sounds like a simple question, but it isn’t. Not all styles deal with self defense in the same way, and some don’t at all. World War II combatives are great for combat, but maybe you just want to lose weight. Boxing while being a great sport to know is limited to striking and is not well rounded, but will build strength and help someone lose weight. Taekwondo which is a style from Korea is a great sport, but lacks throws and grapples. There are enough styles of martial arts out there so it is only a matter time to until you find what you want.
