Staying Safe on the Babysitting Job
Many teens take jobs babysitting for families with small children. Those who “go the extra mile” may obtain training in CPR and other babysitting skills. This is a great step for responsible babysitters to take. However, part of the responsibilities of babysitting is to ensure the safety of those under the care of the babysitter; this includes safety from dangerous situations and people.
Before accepting a babysitting job, it helps the babysitter to get specific instructions from the parent regarding number of children that will be watched, as well as the ages of each child. Babysitters should also ask about foods (and allergies) bed times, medicines to be gives or medical conditions. Asking these questions sets any babysitter up for: 1) getting the job and 2) being prepared. Imagine also being able to tell parents “I have been trained in self defense as well”!
Any person who takes jobs babysitting would do well to include self defense training as a part of their other job training. Learning self defense is not difficult, and provides a babysitter with the confidence needed to be the best they can be. One can learn from self defense videos if getting to a class is too costly or too inconvenient. While a live class is wise for practical purposes, my self defense videos provide anyone who wants to learn self defense with the necessary information.
On the job, a babysitter will do well to follow some Do’s and Don’ts from the following list:
• DON’T tell callers that you are the babysitter. Better yet..Don’t answer the phone at all.
• DON’T answer the door to anyone you do not know. The only exception is if a parent informs you that they are expecting someone to stop by. Best to inform parents ahead of time that your practice is that you do not open the door to strangers.
• DON’T go outside to investigate any noise.
• DO lock all doors and windows as soon as you are alone with children.
• DO learn self defense!
• DO stay with children at all times
• DO have fun!
Babysitting is a great way for young people to earn extra money while having fun with children of various ages. When fear can be eliminated through personal safety measures, this job can be even more rewarding.
