Some Hidden Benefits of Self Defense
I am still surprised that some people find that they need more reason than personal safety to consider self defense training (sometimes misspelled self defence training). I know my situation is a little different; and perhaps anyone who has ever been the victim of a violent attack would think along the same lines as I do. But for those who still wonder what other purpose there may be to learning self defense or martial arts moves, here you go.
To me, the very best and biggest benefit of learning self defense, martial arts moves, combat training, etc, is that you can enable yourself to at least put up a fight against an attacker if you ever need to. What more could you ask for? Seriously, maybe you are a loving person who feels connected to all other creatures on earth. That’s a great mindset; but still, would you allow one of those with whom you are connected to harm you – possibly kill you? That’s no different than punching yourself repeatedly in the face! You probably can’t imagine doing that, can you? I certainly couldn’t. Hence, I have travelled the world in a quest to obtain the kind of training that would make me into my own wall of safety.
Practicing self defense; whether it be learning martial arts moves or working out with a self defense DVD right at home, is a way to stay fit while learning to protect yourself. More people are concerned with their personal fitness than their personal safety, so the physical benefits of self defense training may outweigh the true safety benefits. Whatever it takes works for me; I’m just happy anytime someone takes the leap into training in self defense.
Depending on the type of training, the physical benefits can range from increased cardiovascular health to fat loss and muscle toning. For those who are looking for a new way to burn fat and get fit, intense boot camp type self defense classes are great. Just about any type of training also increases agility, flexibility and balance.
The other physical benefit of self defense training is the stress reduction aspect. Reducing stress is something that all of us could use some help with. Stress comes at us from all different directions, and anytime you can find a way to work it off, you’re ahead of the game. Working out frustrations and stresses on a heavy bag, through martial arts moves or with a cooperative partner can make an enormous difference in overall stress reduction.
Self defense training is like sugar in a cake; without it, life can be a little less sweet!
