Size Matters – or Does it?

Military Self DefenseWhen we’re talking about fighting and self defense tactics, it is an assumption among novices that size matters. A smaller, weaker person is doomed to be the victim of a larger, stronger attacker. Looking at statistics for rape, robbery and other assault, you can see that this assumption is also alive and well in the minds of the bad guys.

Those who have studied martial arts or military self defense know better; and you should know better too. Size matters, but not in the way you may initially think. It would be irresponsible to say that size doesn’t play a role in fighting. It’s the age-old battle of “the survival of the fittest”. However, there is something that trumps size. Size may equal strength; but it doesn’t have to equal power.

How big you are is natural; it’s how you were born. Smaller people can add some bulk and can add some strength; but they will never be bigger than a bigger guy or girl. This is why the sport of fighting has different weight categories for people to fight in. A featherweight is strong in his own category; but may be pummeled by a heavyweight champ. Get it?

So. Here’s the thing. You can’t rely on strength to fight off an attacker. So what do you have to work with? Skill! This is good news because skill is the thing you CAN change. The more skilled you become in your self defense tactics, the better you will be at finding ways out of a sticky situation. When you practice self defense techniques regularly and utilize the power of visualization, you can be prepared for any fight or attack and know exactly what to do to act offensively and get yourself out of there. Your style can be military self defense, it can be jiu-jitsu, or it can be whatever you think you are most comfortable with.

It is this principle that makes the world of martial arts turn. Many martial arts are geared towards the smaller person gaining the ability to fight and protect themselves. Thankfully, there is such a wealth of information available that anyone can become their very own hero. Just remember…practice makes perfect!
