Self Defense Weapons

It is essential to know some good empty-handed fighting techniques, but they’re only one aspect of close combat. Weapons are a force multiplier and can make the different when you’re attacked so they cannot be ignored.

Self defense is not one style of fighting it is a way of thinking for your life. Yes you might be ready to fight, but being vigilant can prevent you from ever having to use your self defense training. Having a weapon and training with it is just another way of ensuring your safety. There are many options besides carrying a firearm that are very effective in a close combat situation. Practice your combat martial arts, but remember to include weapons training with your other self defense drills.

Now a weapon regardless of how lethal it is isn’t effective in combat if you don’t know how to use it properly. There is an old saying, “a sharp blade is nothing without a sharp eye,” and you only develop the skills you need for combat through training. Whether you’re carrying a knife or pepper spray you need to practice with it because when your in combat you will be to nervous to do anything other then respond with the training that has been ingrained in you from many hours of practice. Work with your self defense instructor to find out what weapon works best with your style, and use it to make your techniques that much more dangerous. Also you need to practice simply taking out the weapon so you know you can get it ready in the heat of the moment. Having a weapon isn’t enough; you have to be ready and willing to use it.

There was a time when weapons were carried without worry of repercussions, sadly though those times have passed. People are so fearful of the possibility of violence that policies and laws been put in place based on those irrational fears and some don’t even make sense. In Florida a 10 year old girl now faces a felony charge for the possession of a weapon on school property and the principal suspended her for ten days. Apparently those running Sunrise Elementary School seem to think a girl bring a steak knife to cut her steak during lunch is a major threat even though they admit she didn’t do anything inappropriate. It seems taking the knife away from her after she was finished and telling her not to do it again would have been to extreme of a step, but this is the world in which we live. Do you really think terrorists and other criminals are deterred by those laws? Since common sense is lacking you have to use your best judgment when selecting a weapon.

When you’re actually attacked you might not have time to go for your weapon, and that is when your unarmed combat training will kick in. First you get out of the way off your assailants attacks and then you strike back hard with a flurry of strikes, and then when you have driven them back you can pull your weapon. Whether you hold them at bay or have to injure them further depends on the situation, but don’t let your guard down. Also your martial arts training will save you when you don’t have the room to use your weapon or it is just out of reach. You might have a lethal arsenal of weapons and a satellite phone in the next room, but you need to be able to fight your way through an intruder to get to them.

Despite what some would have you believe weapons aren’t inherently evil; it is the morals of the person using them that make a difference. Some see a knife as something nasty only carried by thugs and killers, but in the trained hands of a responsible citizen it is weapon for self defense. The phrase self defense weapons includes a multitude of different weapons that are all useful tools for self defense. If you can carry it without difficulty in public places, easily gain access to, and you’re trained you should seriously consider carrying a weapon as part of your self defense preparation. Martial arts training helps a lot in a street fight, but it isn’t enough to overcome weapons so be prepared.
