Self Defense Options

Girl With GunSome statistics show that an individual in America is attacked approximately every 24 seconds. Does this scare you? Even without this statistic, many people find that they feel frightened to go out at certain times, or feel a general sense of discomfort with their surroundings when they are away from home. Inside of the home, people typically feel safer (often too much so); but you should be able to feel safe inside of your home!

There are plenty of options that people can take advantage of in order to feel a higher sense of personal safety. I have written about them separately; but here I will review each individually. The first options are each weapons. Weapons have a very valid place in self defense. In fact, from ancient times, many martial arts styles have utilized weapons as a supplement to their martial arts moves. If your self defense consists of any of the fighting martial arts styles, weapons may make the ideal accompaniment to what you already know.

1. Pepper spray is ideal for those who don’t have the need for bulk, but want a tool that will assist them in maintaining their personal safety. Pepper spray is the same thing as Mace; with Mace simply being a name brand. Pepper spray comes in various sizes, offering options for people to carry it in a purse, a pocket or around a lanyard. The safest form of pepper spray seems to be the new gel type. Using a gel form, there is less chance that the user will get a blast of unwanted burning.

2. Taser guns are popular tools used by law enforcement officers. Many people also feel that they are great tools for personal safety. While the taser can be used against an attacker, there are reasons why I prefer pepper spray. The main reason is that pepper spray has a farther reach than does a taser gun. If you need further proof, pepper spray has a longer lasting effect on an attacker, allowing you more time to get to safety.

3. Weapons are, of course, great tools for personal safety. However, no weapon can completely replace what can be done through study of one of the fighting martial arts styles, or through training from a self defense DVD. The self defense DVD that I have created offers the moves that are easy for the body to learn, and are also those that I have found to be highly effective.
Maintaining personal safety is an important factor for a long and happy life. Self defense training is a part of staying safe. Weapons do come into play and can be highly effective when used properly (meaning training is necessary); but do not replace self defense training.
