Road Safety Tips
Getting stuck on the side of the road is not only inconvenient; it can be scary. Women, especially, should take extra precautions with their vehicles and educate themselves about road safety. I know several women who have communicated their fears and their questions of what to do should their car break down or their tire go flat.
Of course, I believe that ultimate confidence in personal safety comes only from knowing you have the power to protect yourself. This is true for man, woman and child. Through my self defense videos, I do everything I possibly can to teach and instill this confidence in anyone who wishes to obtain it. Whether you learn from my self defense videos or from a martial arts DVD or from some other program; the very best way to maintain any amount of personal safety in any situation is through education and training. While you are practicing with your martial arts DVD or with my self defense videos on a regular basis, however, here are some tips for road safety to go hand in hand with your training.
- If you get a flat tire or your car begins acting up; but you do not feel safe, keep driving. Pull the car as safely as possible to the side of the road and just keep going. Never get out of the car in traffic. Driving with a flat tire will cause damage to the rim; but this is far better than putting yourself in danger by stopping in an unsafe area.
- Try to pull over in a public area where you can get out of the vehicle and go into a place of business. In the safety of a commercial area, you can call for help.
- If you must stay in your vehicle, lock all doors and keep windows rolled up high. If your car breaks down on a deserted stretch of road, do not get out of the car. Use your cell phone and call for help immediately. If you are scared, call 911 and tell them your situation. While they cannot help you with your flat tire or other vehicle trouble; if you tell the operator you are alone and scared, they will usually dispatch an officer to sit with you until help arrives.
- If your car breaks down close to a place where you can walk for help; lock the vehicle, put out cones for safety, and walk to a place where you can find help. When walking, stay far off the road and face oncoming traffic if possible so you can see and be seen more easily.
- Never get into a car with someone you don’t know. Here is another benefit of walking facing traffic. Should someone stop to offer you a ride, you can graciously decline, stating they are going in the opposite direction of where you need to go. The only vehicles that are safe to accept a ride from are police or fire vehicles.
It is an unfortunate fact that some women have become victims on the roadways. Self defense techniques are one way that you can maintain your safety. Carrying pepper spray (gel) is another way to make sure you can fight off an attack no matter where you are.
