Public Safety

As the year draws to a conclusion it is time for us to look back and evaluate what worked and what didn’t work when it comes to personal safety. The world hasn’t gotten any safer, but people still haven’t done enough when it comes to self defense.

You only have to watch the TV or search the Internet to realize that the world isn’t a safe place and while some of it has been blown out of proportion by the media you can’t take it for granted that you won’t become a victim. The fact is you’re more likely to be struck by lightening then killed by a terrorist, but what do you do when you when the worst case scenario happens to you? You can’t explain to a mugger or rapist that crime is down and this shouldn’t be happening, and you sure as hell can’t tell a terrorist that is threatening to blow up your plane that you only want to have a peaceful dialogue with them. If you’re planning to go out in public any time in the year to come you had better brush up on your self defense training.

Is a random attack at the shopping centre, on a train platform, or even at your place of worship in your future? Well, all of these attacks have happened in the passed year, and you can bet that nobody thought it would happen to them. People like to say that you were at the right place at the wrong time, but you have to wonder though what made the kid with the assault rifle Johnny on the spot. You can’t predict when this stuff will happen so you need to be vigilant always. If you see something out of place, change your routine, or report it to someone in authority. You know not to go to the ATM at 3 am, but crimes happen during the day and doesn’t always make sense.

Now many people have all kinds of misconceptions when it comes to self defense. First many don’t see the need to learn lethal close combat techniques. After all it isn’t like your going to war, and you’re not looking for trouble, but trouble will find you. You could end up in a battle for your life over a parking spot, a seat on a train, or you just happen to be in the way of a rampage. You need real training to help you survive, and do the most damage when you have to make your move. Another mistake that people make is that they assume their sport martial arts training in styles like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will work in a street fight. You have to understand that those styles while they’re a lot of fun and effective out on the mat have been designed not to do injury to people. Knowing a sport martial art style doesn’t protect you, and you need to be ready in willing to fight.

If someone starts shooting at you while you’re at the mall or begins attacking a friend of yours while you’re waiting for a training do you really know what to do? It is a good idea to call the police, but that won’t stop someone from killing your friends and family. You need to be ready to fight and take down a killer, and you can prepare yourself by training for close combat. If you act other will follow and help you, but you can’t afford to wait. If you have the right training you can make the difference. You aren’t being a hero you’re just to the right thing under extreme circumstances. Those in law enforcement are there to help you, but they can’t be with you all the time so you need to learn how to protect yourself until help arrives. Think how much safer the world would be if those who would do evil knew that people were ready and willing to fight.
