Ninja Outfit

No martial arts outfit inspires fear more than the ninja outfit. Usually completely black, the uniform is tight fitting and only leaves the eyes exposed. When worn by a skilled assassin it can seem as if a ninja appears from nowhere and strikes in a flash, and disappears before the body hits the ground. They trained in secret and no target was beyond their reach. That’s the story anyway. The truth behind the ninja is a little different, and a lot more grounded in reality. The outfit doesn’t make you an assassin it’s your skill and your willingness to do anything to get a kill.

What most people know about ninjas comes from movies and TV and both forms of entertainment take creative license with whatever they produce. For proof of this, watch any film that is supposed to be historical fiction. For each piece a film maker gets right there are several things they get wrong. Action movies are the worst offenders though because they’re all about action and not story telling. There are exceptions of course – but you can’t consider most films as a source for your information.

The ninja in films is often times portrayed as a secretive assassin clad in the traditional black ninja outfit. He or she sneaks off and cuts the throat of their intended victim and slips away from their target unseen by guards. Well, that’s only half right. Yes ninjas did operate in secret groups in Japan, but there were many secret societies and clubs. They probably never wore the black outfit, but even if they did it would only be used in extreme situations. They would try to blend in among people – attempting to go unnoticed. They would use poison more often than their blades, and tried to make the death look like an accident. Some even believe samurai dressed as ninjas, so they would kill off rivals without having to face them in combat.

Sure the ninja were masters of stealth, but they knew that wasn’t the only option available to them. They weren’t looking for a fight when they entered an enemy’s castle. They were just looking to do a job as quickly and as effectively as possible. If for some reason you want to start learning the ways of an assassin don’t go out and buy the ninja outfit, not just because you’ll stupid, but because you won’t blend in
