More Validity to Self Defense Training

I was recently talking with a friend, and the topic of fighting off weapons came up. He said to me,
“Yeah, there’s really no threat that I’d ever have to fight off a weapon, Chris. People don’t walk around carrying samurai swords anymore.” He actually got a good chuckle from his seemingly accurate evaluation of current times.

This is true, you don’t often see people strolling the aisles of the grocery store, sword swinging from their hip. But check this out. I have a pretty good memory and so I told some tales to my friend who was of the mindset that his self defense training would come up against something far more manageable than a real life weapon.

Back in 2008, in a small Southern California town, there were three instances of violence reported within one month’s time in which assailants carried weapons…odd weapons. In one attack, two construction workers got into an altercation with a man and ended up whipping out a 3-foot machete to use on him. A machete, folks.

In one of the other two attacks reported very briefly that month, a man was indeed attacked with a samurai sword after pulling pepper spray on two brothers who didn’t take kindly to him painting over their graffiti “art”. The last attack, involving two women, also included a samurai sword.

In all three of these attacks, the untrained (no self defense training) victims survived. What this says to me is that WITH self defense training, you have a far better chance at surviving any kind of attack than with no training whatsoever. If these three victims can come out from their brush with violence and live to tell their tales, what do you think self defense training could do for you?

Self defense does not mean that you are trained to fight like an expert MMA guy. It does not have to take hours out of your day to adequately learn self defense moves that can ultimately save your life. When faced with a potentially violent situation, you pretty much won’t be able to recall specialized martial arts moves by name. You will, however, be able to use effective and easy to remember self defense moves should you need them.

The truth of the matter is that the person who seeks to alleviate you from your valuables is probably some thug who has had no formal training in any type of self defense him or herself. This therefore gives you a leg up from the get go, if you have followed through with your own self defense training. So keep at it, my friend!
