Martial Arts Suit

If you want a martial arts suit you can look under a uniform, gi, and a number of other terms that all mean the same thing. Sure there are some slight changes thanks to suppliers who offer people all different kinds of things. They will offer ninja outfits for every aspiring assassin and uniforms with cool dragons on them and a variety of colors. You can even get a suit that looks like the flag of your homeland.

Sounds kinda of cool right? Add some rising sun headbands and some cool weapons and you’re ready to go into battle. Well, you’re not so stop fooling yourself. The clothes don’t make the man in this case. Without real training you are just another person in a costume. Don’t feel too bad though you’re not alone, and there are even some people out there with no talent teaching. Put the rainbow colored uniform back in the closet and put away the free throwing knives. Real martial arts training starts with the basics, and what you wear shouldn’t matter.

Now you will need a uniform, but don’t spend a lot of money on something you may never get to wear. Martial arts schools have a dress code and almost in every case it’s a simple white uniform until you become an instructor. If you’re trying on your own with a DVD it doesn’t really matter so workout clothes will be fine. In fact, if you’re self defense training you should train in street clothes because they will be what you’re wearing when you’re attacked. You don’t walk around in your uniform all the time do you? Well, if you do, and you’re outside of the schools seek professional help because they don’t even do that in Japan. Learn how to fight in boots and high heels or whatever you regularly wear at work or out on the town.

You don’t need a martial arts suit to be a martial artist. It is a mindset and a way of living, and if you spend more time deciding what to wear then how to train you deserve to get you ass kicked. Wear something that will hold up to the riggers of training and will last a long time. Follow the rules of your school and don’t try to make a fashion statement.

  1. You need a pretty good weight gi of you are doing grappling. But in my school we have street clothes day very often so our students can see how those stylish tight pants might just get them in trouble.
