Martial Arts Business
So you have decided to turn your passion into a way to make a living. Congratulations on your first step into the martial arts business world. You have done the hard stuff like sacrificed years of your life to train and earn your black belt, but you always have to remember that your new career is one part martial arts and one part business, and you can’t neglect any of it. You have to find a location, you have to get insurance, and you have to figure out a budget. Will you teach children and adults or will you offer other things besides traditional martial arts training? Do you even have a business plan yet? There is plenty to do besides write and teach so get ready for your next big challenge in martial arts.
You’re in the martial arts business and that means making money. You need to realize that your school has to have more then one stream of income, and if you retail you need to buy supplies whole sale. While there has been a lot of selling out in martial arts whole sale martial arts isn’t a bad idea. You can carry everything your students need and a few extras. For a small amount of space, you can make a lot more money. You like teaching, but you can’t allow that to be the only way to make money with your school. A gym bag, a gi, and a t-shirt are all things students need so don’t send them someplace else. You can work out deals with them that other schools or stores won’t so they will have what you need.
The martial arts business is about providing a service that people that want and need at a fair price, and you need to keep your eye on the students and the till. You need to pay the rent, payroll, and advertising and that is just the beginning of your expenses. Along with your black belt you might want to take some business courses, and get an accountant. There is nothing wrong with making money as long as you’re honest with people. Don’t tell people you’re teaching them self defense when you know you’re teaching them a cultural fighting art or combat sport. If you want to teach self defense teach it separately and be a fair business man or woman with your students not just their teacher.
