Living the Self Defense Lifestyle – Tip #2

Self Defense StyleFollowing up on last weeks tip for living a self defense lifestyle, today we delve into Tip #2. Learning self defense or martial arts is a huge part of your self defense lifestyle, of course. As I have stated (and will state again), it doesn’t matter if you learn from a martial arts DVD or self defense DVD – or both; the point is that you learn it and you practice it.

The self defense lifestyle is one that keeps you safe at all times in all places. The place is what we are going to talk about today; and that place is home. Home is where you go to relax and unwind. The four walls that you live inside of are protective; they allow you to fall asleep at night feeling disengaged from all that is “out there”. The subconscious thought is that you are home and therefore you are safe. I mean, really, it’s not like someone is going to knock on your door and barge their way in, right? When was the last time you heard of a bad guy crawling through a window he jimmied to enter a home; not knowing if there was anyone home or not?

Last time I heard of this happening was 4 days ago. A woman was asleep on her couch during the mid-morning hours. MID-MORNING! Safe, right? Well, a man crawled through a back window to come right in. Once in, he robbed her…and raped her. And then he let himself out the front door. Her perception of home safety was way off, wouldn’t you say?

No one deserves to have their home pilfered, or their body taken in ways they don’t want. This is why I repeat: learn martial arts; learn self defense. However, don’t let that take the place of home safety issues.

When you come home – no matter what time it is – there is no reason why you should not look around. Look up and down the street. Look at your front door and the windows before you enter. When you go inside of your house, lock the doors behind you. Look, it doesn’t matter where you live, there is a chance that someone may try to come in. Even a slight chance gives reason to lock your doors.

Windows can also be pried open. This is an easy fix. Go to the local home improvement store and get some wooden dowels or 2×2’s. Cut them and place them at the base of the window, wedged into the track. With these in your windows, the only way someone is getting in is breaking through. If someone breaks your window, you will hear. And if you have prepared yourself with training in self defense or martial arts, then you should be able to get them out of your home pretty quickly. Either that or you will incapacitate them until police show up to drag them off to jail.

Safety isn’t just about training with a martial arts DVD or a self defense class. There are so many things you can do to make your home a safer place. Locking doors and windows is just one step. Lighting is also a detractor. If your home features plenty of light outside, there are fewer places where a bad guy can hide. This one thing alone will send thieves to a more willing target; a home that sits in darkness.

Incorporating home safety into your self defense lifestyle may take creating some new habits; but the payoff is worth it, wouldn’t you say?
