Living the Self Defense Lifestyle – Tip #1
Self defense is more than knowing kicks and strikes. It is more than facing danger, it is also about avoiding danger. We have talked about situational awareness, and how a good self defense coach teaches in ways that build your natural intuition. Situational awareness will save you from more danger than you know. In fact, you probably utilize your awareness skills without even thinking about it sometimes. For instance, when you are driving down the road, you have a sense of what is going on around you. Your safety on the road is not only dependent on how well you drive, but on how well you read road conditions. The self defense lifestyle works in much the same way.
Now, just because you learn how to read the environment and watch for safety hazards does not mean that you can forego learning effective self defense tactics. Whether you learn from a class or from my self defense videos; the point is you need to learn. Many people have talked of a hesitation to enter the classroom environment, and so a self defense video is an ideal way for them to pick up the fighting skills they need in their self defense toolbox.
While you are working through your self defense videos, however, there are tips that you can begin to use in your daily life to keep you safer and build up your awareness. Ideally, you will get to a point where situational awareness is second nature to you. This does not take a lot of work. In just a few moments, you can gauge whether or not you want to walk down that street or walk into that club or restaurant.
Today’s tip is for times when you are out in a restaurant or coffee shop; any place where you are in a public setting and will be seated. The tip is very simple and yet very useful. If you have ever been out with a Special Forces guy you will notice this tip in practice every time. When you find a seat in a public place, face the door. That’s it. Wherever you are, you need to be able to see the entrance of the venue. By situating yourself with a bird’s eye view of the entrance, you get to see everyone who comes and goes.
Sitting with your back to a wall and your front to the door is ideal. If something goes awry in the place, you won’t be caught off guard; you will see it coming before anyone else. Should you need to utilize the skills you learn in my self defense videos, you can be prepared and know what you’re up against.
The second part of this tip is to learn to check a place out as you enter and walk through to your table. Is there more than one door? Is there a way to get out quick if you need to? All of this goes along with situational awareness. When you learn to scope a place out as soon as you enter; you are beginning to live the self defense lifestyle. As I started the article; self defense is more than the techniques you learn in my self defense video. You’ve got to start working on honing your awareness and your intuition as well. This is just one tip in a long list that will be covered over time.
