It’s All in Your Head

self defense tacticsThere are plenty of places where you can go to learn “self defense tactics”. Many martial arts studios claim to be able to show you how to defend yourself in the face of violence. I’m not going to knock down martial arts studios; that is not my intent. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there is a time and a place for martial arts. It is a great sport and you can learn a lot from the arts. However, self defense tactics are not on the list.

Now, no matter what type of self defense you learn – it could be some wazoo military self defense – you need to master one thing before you will ever be effective. When you are in the face of violence, you need to know it. You need to face it and acknowledge it. The problem with most people is that a) they don’t know how to gauge the situation and b) they freeze mentally when it’s too late to get out of a violent situation.

Simply put, YOU are your worst enemy in the event of an attack. So before I ever talk about what you should do; what self defense tactics you should employ in a given situation, I want to tell you that you need to be mentally prepared for violence. Look, violence happens. All you have to do is turn on the news to know that. But let me ask you, do you lock you door behind you when you come home? Even during the day? Do you look around the parking lot before walking to your car?

If you are not constantly aware of the fact that violent crimes happen anywhere at anytime, then you are not going to be mentally prepared to defend yourself should you need to. This is the beauty of military self defense: it teaches you awareness first and foremost. When you know what could happen, you can be prepared with what to do in case it does. It’s that simple.

So tip for the day: get out of your head and realize that any situation could turn bad very quickly. This doesn’t make you paranoid; it makes you aware. Awareness if the first key to staying safe; once you’ve mastered that, you are ready to put your effective self defense techniques to work.
