How to Become a Victim of Crime

self defense techniquesAll you have to do is turn on the nightly news to hear stories of robberies, home invasions and assaults. It is likely that you listen with empathy, feeling sorry for the poor souls who were victimized. But once the story is over, your mind is on to the next thing and you forget all about it. It may not be until you become a victim of crime yourself that you really gain an understanding of the importance of personal safety. Why wait until then? Why not learn all the things people do wrong and make sure you are not joining the ranks of individuals who mark themselves as victims every single day?

To put a flashing blue light right over your head, calling out to any bad guy, the biggest thing you can do is ignore your surroundings. You’ve heard this advice for years, to hold your head high when you walk and look around at all time. And yet, how many times have you exited your vehicle at the store while on the phone and talked on the phone all the way into and through the store. Can you say: “rob me?” Really, any conversation can wait until you are in a private place where bad guys aren’t watching. When out and about, stay off the phone (and that means no texting) and keep your eyes up and aware.

Exercise is an important part of a lot of lives. To live long and healthy, it is recommended that you walk, jog, hike or hit the gym. Now, what goes hand in hand with exercise for most folks is their music. Countless people plug in while out on their nightly jog before or after work. You may do this, and have your cell phone on you; thinking that you have a degree of safety from it. While it makes the time go by faster to exercise with music, find a safe way to do this. The best possible scenario will have only one ear plugged; allowing you to still hear what is going on around you. This goes for times at the gym too. When you have your music on, it’s not like a bad guy can’t be casing you out. Stay focused on safety, not your music. Don’t leave the gym with your headphones in; and don’t jog with headphones in both ears.

Clearly these are not the only ways to fall prey to a bad guy who wants your wallet, your car, or worse. However, the point is pretty much the same regardless of scenario. The first steps to true self defense are not learning all the coolest martial arts moves or difficult self defense techniques. The first step in personal safety is to open your eyes and be aware of everything that is going on around you. When you look around and look confident, then you have immediately taken the sign off your forehead marking you as a potential target. You cannot count on awareness alone and should still learn proper self defense that you know you can count on in case you need it; but awareness is the key ingredient to real and lasting personal safety.
