Grappling Gloves

So you want to be a cage fighter and fight in a sport that combines boxing and wrestling moves in a blood fight where there is no escape. Well let’s get a few things straight first before you start training or even buying any equipment like grappling gloves. It may sound harsh, but mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or what ever grappling sport you want to start getting involved in isn’t fighting. There are rounds, referees, a time limit, and someone will stop the fight before some gets killed. Never mind the fact that you’re wearing grappling gloves that prevent many injuries. Sure you draw blood and there is a chance to get badly hurt, but it isn’t fighting, and it doesn’t teach you self defense.

Now if you’re a mixed martial arts fighter you know the truth. Your training only does so much outside the ring because in real life in places like alley ways and bars people fight dirty and do anything to win. The last think you want to do is grapple with an attacker because of what could happen. They could pull a knife or other weapons just start hacking into you and your right on top of them or worse a friend of your attacker could just walk up and start beating on you while you were completely unaware of what was going on around you. Now none of that sounds good, but you don’t have to quite grappling, you just have to understand the limitations of your training and supplement it.

Mixed martial arts and other sports do help with your self defense because they give you an idea what it is like to fight with someone and to put your hands on them and have them fight back. When you train for self defense forget about using gloves and start toughening up your hands by hitting the heavy bag or a striking post. Furthermore, learn how to hit barehanded. It is different than wearing grappling gloves and there are ways to make your strikes do more damage. Most importantly you need the right mind set for self defense. Though many say there are no rules in caging fighting you know that isn’t the case. You’re not allowed to bite, gouge out eyes, and hit your opponent in the groin, but those are all things you need to do in a self defense situation.
