From Self Defense Videos to the Office – the Logical Next Step in your Self Defense Journey
Gaining self defense skills is not a task that is highly complicated. I mean, how hard is it to raise your hand, step forward and hit someone in the nose? The skills that I teach in my self defense videos can be mastered in a very short time, because they have been designed for such a purpose. Once you learn the effective moves to disarm and overpower any attacker, it’s only a matter of maintaining your skills through regular practice (which can be done with or without help from self defense videos).
So you’ve learned all the moves that are on your chosen self defense videos. What do you do next? The first thing is to keep it simple. Rather than reaching for another program, or more complex kicks and strikes, it serves you better to just maintain the skills you have. Remember, self defense is about staying safe; not about throwing a kick that arcs over someone’s head. That’s just showing off. Keep your self defense moves simple and you will be rewarded with the ability to fight off an attack.
Instead of adding fancy moves to your bucket of self defense skills, think of real life situations and what will serve you better. What I mean is, look into scenario training. This can be done with a professional trainer or even with a group of people you train with. It can even be done in your house with your friends or family who have learned the skills you have learned right along with you.
Scenario training mimics the real world. There are two main ways to go about scenario training; one is to walk through small scenarios that touch on one point in a conflict. The other way to train with scenarios is to play fully. Full-play scenarios allow more time; just like might happen in a real life situation.
Let’s take a look at a small scenario. Let’s say you have learned how to escape from a grab from behind. In a small scenario, you would stand in the middle of a room and have your partner grab you from behind. As you begin to fight, your partner will become uncooperative. After all, chances of a bad guy letting you go as soon as you put up a fight are slim to none. He’s going to try to control you that much more.
The same situation in a full-play scenario would be that you head out to the park and take a walk. At some point in your walk, your partner will run up behind you (or jump out from a hiding spot) and grab you from behind. This is different from the small scenario in the way that you aren’t quite as expectant of your attack. You know it’s going to happen; you just don’t know when or where. Your attacker approaches you just as you would be approached in real life.
Scenario training can take place anywhere; from your home to your office. How much scenario training you do will be determined by your overall motivation to stay safe in every area of your life. The more you train, the safer you will be.
