Different Martial Arts
There are a lot of different martial arts out there, but you can organize them by their purpose. Now you probably think all martial arts styles are the same and the only difference is how they work (including being used for self defense). That isn’t the case though and not all styles will protect you when you’re in a real fight. It is true that many styles of martial arts started off for self defense, but for one reason or another; they all they changed into something else and became less effective in a real fight. There are three types of martial arts today, cultural fighting arts, combat sports, and self defense styles. These three styles make up the world of martial arts training.
Cultural fighting arts are styles that are no longer useful on the battlefield, but people continue to practice out of a sense of tradition. It is not that those styles aren’t effective – but their day has passed. Many of these styles require people to carry weapons which are difficult to do in today’s society. Other styles simply haven’t adapted with the times and can’t handle real world situations.
Most people who practice martial arts are practicing combat sports. The styles look like real combat, but looks can be deceiving. When you play a game the object is to win and have a good time doing it and no matter how intense things get you’re not trying to kill your opponent. In a real fight though it is all about survival, and if you want to win you need to do every dirty trick and extra painful move to do it (including things that would normally get you thrown out of a sport match). Some of the combat sports were once used for self defense, but they were changed over time so people wouldn’t get hurt.
Now there are many different martial arts, but there are few styles that provide real self defense training. For a style to be effective as a form of self defense it has to be practical, work in any situation, and easy to learn. When you’re fighting, things will be happening so fast you won’t have time to think so you need moves that are easy and do the most damage.
