Develop your Assets

Self Defense TechniquesWhen you are studying martial arts or self defense, you gain valuable assets – the actual martial arts moves or self defense techniques that you will use to stay protected in a violent situation. However, the effectiveness of your assets is not only dependent upon the individual moves; it is dependent on you and your overall power.

Now, don’t freak out. I’m not saying that you have to overpower your opponent. That’s not true at all. The self defense techniques that I teach are geared so that the smaller, weaker opponent stands a chance against a larger, stronger one. There are martial arts styles that also focus on the same thing; such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Depending on how often you are working on your self defense techniques, and on how intense your training is, you may need to add more physical activity into your routine. In the jungle, the big lions will prey upon smaller animals. Sometimes they will even attack the weaker in their own tribe. Those that are healthy and strong dominate those who are weak. We see the same occurrence in cities all across the world; those who believe they are stronger will prey upon those they can dominate.

Do you have to be strong to protect yourself from an attacker? No; but you should develop the assets that will work to get you out of a dangerous situation. Those assets can be your self defense techniques like strikes and counters. But assets can also be overall physical ability. For instance, if you can’t run more than 20 feet without getting winded, how can you expect to run to safety if you are far from it?

Developing your assets is not difficult. Find physical pursuits that will build you up where you are weak. If you do need some physical strength; light strength training can do your body good. If you have no endurance, take up jogging or even power walking. Experts in reality martial arts say that your goal should be to have the ability to jump into a physical situation and maintained sustained activity output (fight) for a full minute. And that’s just the beginning. What you really want is to be able to work up to a full three minutes of sustained physical exertion.

What you learn in any of the martial arts styles, or in your self defense training, only takes you so far. Self defense needs to be well-rounded in order to be as effective as possible. It is more than just moves; it is also mindset and stamina. Now go work the heavy bag!
