More on Weapons
Yesterday I talked about how tools like pepper spray go hand in hand with martial arts self defense. But I don’t want to hit that so hard that you make one of the common mistakes that could be made. I don’t want you to think you should not learn martial arts self defense; I don’t want you to think that a weapon is your only line of defense. I also don’t want to make it seem as though pepper spray or a knife or a taser are the tools that you can use against an attacker.
When it comes to protecting yourself in a violent situation, you should employ anything and everything that martial arts self defense can teach you. You should also grab anything nearby that you can use as a weapon. This may be located in your purse or pocket; or may be found on the ground around you. Tools to use against an attacker can be found just about anywhere; you just have to know to look for them – and learn how to use them.
There is a difference between always having a weapon available and always having something accessible that you can use as a weapon. Here’s the difference. You may not have your purse in a club, and you therefore have no way to carry pepper spray. Guys, most clubs won’t let you in with a knife in your back pocket. You can, however, do a quick scan of your surroundings when out without a thing on your person. It could be something as simple as a beer bottle or even a pen. And of course, when you learn martial arts; there are your two hands that can inflict a good deal of pain to thwart an attack.
The point to having things that you can use against an attacker is to bring in the big guns. There isn’t a lot of time to waste when faced with danger. You’ve got to think clearly and get yourself to a safe place. When you know of all the things that can be used along with martial arts self defense, then you have a large selection of tools to help you stay away from danger.
Ok, so here is the key element to using weapons that you find in your surroundings. A hard object is used on bone; and a pointy object is used in soft tissue. This alone is a reminder to you that you have to develop the mindset of protection. If you are not in the right mindset that NO ONE can hurt you; your tools will be ineffective as you will not use them properly if at all. It isn’t an easy thing to take a pen and jab it into another person’s body; but in a violent situation this may be exactly what you have to do. Mentally prepare yourself and your tools will work for you.
A tool can be your car keys; an umbrella or flashlight; or a pen. A tool can be a chair, if you’re strong enough and fast enough to use it with force. A tool can be a beer bottle or a can of soup. A tool can be a stick you find on the ground. A tool can be sand or rocks. When you put your mind to it; you can come up with several things that you can use in the event that you are confronted with an attacker. Remember the tool to learn martial arts self defense and start looking around when you are out and about. Add ideas to the list of things you could use in an attack; and work on your mindset. No one has the right to hurt you. Fight for your right and stay safe.
