Martial Arts and Self Defense – Same Thing?

Combat TrainingThere are many people who will ask the question, “what type of martial arts training do I need to master for self-defense?”.  The very nature of this question will lead you down the wrong path in terms of self-defense.

Martial arts training is a wonderful way to stay active and fit.  The movements introduced in any type of martial arts training bring a person more power, more flexibility and more stamina.  The martial arts are also a great way to learn stress relief and focus; for there is a certain spiritual element to the arts if you train properly with a good teacher.

So popular have the arts become that you can now find yourself a martial arts dvd from which you learn right at home.  Again, there are many benefits to learning forms, strikes and kicks from a martial arts dvd or from a school; just don’t mistake it for self-defense.  The lie that people believe is that they can protect themselves from an attack if they learn the right kicks to deliver; the right punches throw.  However, the idea that martial arts training all on its own will protect you in a potentially life or death situation is way off the mark.  Want to be protected?  Click here for a free video to see how.

Here’s what you really need to ask yourself:  Do you want to be able to break a board with your little finger, or break a bad guy’s nose with one swift hit?  Do you want to know what to look for and how to avoid dangerous situations as well as know how to diffuse situations and get away when necessary?  If the answers are yes to any of these questions, then you want to switch out your martial arts dvd for a true self defense training program.

There are a few reasons why martial arts are ineffective self-defense techniques.  One big reason is that not all violence is the same.  One person may find herself having to fight off an attacker, or possibly even date rape.  Another person may find himself having to subdue a drunk friend at a party, or may find himself on the receiving end of some harsh blows.  Each of these scenarios is different but all are dangerous and all are examples of violence that a person may encounter.  Sadly, this is also the short list of possible scenarios, and truthfully, martial arts training is not a one size fits all solution.

For the most part, what you will learn in a MA school or from a martial arts dvd will be movements created for sport.  Sport fighting is far different than the fighting you may have to do to protect your person or your life.  For this reason, it is best to find a true self-defense course that you can learn quickly and easily.

Why do you need self defense in the first place?  Doesn’t training in the martial arts give you the confidence and enough know-how to thwart an attack?  The answer is clearly no.  Self-defense training – true self-defense training – will go beyond just teaching you how to scream and kick your way away from an attacker.

To really be able to protect yourself and get away from a dangerous situation, you’ve got to know what to expect in different scenarios.  Several scenarios were already mentioned above.  Each situation may require you to respond differently.  But the very first part of all of the training you can get in self-defense is to know what’s going on around you.  If you know how to read your surroundings, you can learn to avoid situations and save yourself from having to use fighting techniques in the first place.

Self Defense TechniquesTo know self-defense is one thing; to understand how and when to use it is another.  When you are trained in self-defense and even in martial arts, you gain a respect for the power you know you have.  When you know how to deliver the right move to completely disarm an attacker and give yourself the opportunity to get away, you will know that this power is to be used only when necessary.  Self-defense is just that; defense against violence.  It is not a free pass to instigate violent behaviors with others.

You have every right in the world to practice personal safety.  This incorporates several things; self-defense being one of them.  As it is your right, you must choose whether or not you want to protect yourself.  That’s right; it is a choice that you make.  By choosing to do nothing but hope you are never affected by a violent crime is to choose to be a victim.  The only way to not be a victim is to arm yourself with the information that will keep you safe – safe at home, at work, at school, or on the street.

Violent crimes occur in any place at any time.  They do not only occur in dark alleys in the middle of the night.  You have seen the stories.  You possibly even know someone who has been a victim of a violent crime.  You have the power to change your risk factor. You have the opportunity to learn how to address any possible scenario you may find yourself in.  And now that you know that self-defense goes far beyond martial arts, you are headed in the right direction to take control of your life for good.
