self defenceToday, more and more people are finding the true value in self-defense.  It doesn’t seem to matter where you live, violent crimes are happening everywhere and if you don’t want to be a victim, you’ve got to rely on your own skills to protect you.  The problem is that most of us did not go through combat training like our elite military groups do.  Nor have most people received years of martial arts training.

In the western world, martial arts techniques are typically not taught with self-defense in mind, anyway.  What was started centuries ago as various ways to inflict harm to another person in war has now become a sport in the U.S. and many other countries.  It is not bad that martial arts training works this way; it’s just important to know that if you are receiving training in martial arts techniques, you may not be learning all you need to know to be effective at defending yourself in a dangerous situation.  Click here for Close Combat Training.

One of the most effective things ever developed was hand to hand combat training, or close combat training.  The techniques learned have helped our military to fight through dire situations and has become stellar self-defense tools.  While some martial arts techniques are effective should you find yourself facing harm, there is more to self-defense than just knowing how to throw a punch or a kick.

First and foremost, it must be understood that avoiding dangerous situations is always the best form of self-defense.  When you follow certain well-known tips, you can make yourself less of a target.  Bad guys want to overpower a weaker, less confident person.  They don’t necessarily want to go up against someone who looks like they have a fighting chance at putting a hurt on them.

Here are a few of the tips you have likely heard on any talk show featuring self defense techniques:

When leaving work or school late, walk with a group of people you know.

Walk with purpose and your head held high.

Walk and park in well lit areas.

Keep your car doors locked at all times while driving or parked.

When walking to your car look underneath, around, behind and inside to make sure no one is there.

Never come to a stop to respond to a stranger’s questions, respond while walking away.

And the fan favorite, if you are a target of crime, yell “fire” to draw attention to yourself.

But what happens if you do become a target?  What then?  When you are face to face with an attacker; grabbed from behind, pushed to the ground, or hit, what will you do?  The truth is that all the above-mentioned tips are typically forgotten about soon after they are learned.  The truth is that probably the majority of people who have faced a violent crime had knowledge of safety measures tucked into their memory somewhere.  But they didn’t utilize them.

To be safe, you’ve got to train, just like martial arts training would suggest.  When you want to be good at something, you have to continue to practice.  Although self-defense moves are easy to learn and use large muscle groups, you still need to put time into maintaining a constant awareness of your personal safety.  You need to ask yourself what you would do in specific situations.  What would you do if someone approached you at the ATM?  How would you respond to a knock on your car window while stopped at a red light?  See what you could do on our Home Page

The thing is, martial arts training teaches you the martial arts techniques you want to know.  This is great; not a thing wrong with that.  However, these things are learned in a controlled environment with no talk of personal safety for the most part.  Remember, this is a sport, not a way to save your life.  Self-defense tactics involve understanding what happens to your body and mind in a stressful situation.  Unfortunately, unless you know that your mind will scatter and your fine motor skills will disappear you may be caught off guard and panic.

Self-defense training goes beyond martial arts techniques to show you how to remain calm and respond quickly and effectively to an attack.  Obviously, without practice you will not respond the way the good guy does in the movies.  Life does not mimic art in this way.  But with proper training in self-defense, you can disarm a thug who wants your money, your car, or your life.  You can fight off an attacker even if he’s got you on the ground.  You can even fight off a person who is bigger and stronger than you.
