True Personal Safety
We’ve all hear the term self-defense for the past several years. As people hear of violent crimes in their area, they may seek out ways to learn martial arts as a way to create more safety around them. Martial arts self-defense is just one aspect of personal safety, albeit the most popular and most in-demand.
To learn martial arts is not a bad thing. Of course you first need to determine your reasons for seeking training. Do you really want martial arts self-defense techniques; do you want to learn how to get out of a ground fight? Do you want to simply learn martial arts as a sport; a way to stay fit and strong?
Most martial arts studios today will speak of martial arts self-defense. However, the average studio will teach mainly geared towards sport. The reasons for this are varied; but one big thing could be that people want to learn martial arts while still being able to deny violence. This is very normal, because we have been taught to believe that violence is bad. Indeed, when violent crimes occur, they are bad! See our Home Page for Self Defense guidance.
Ideally, we would live in societies where people behaved normally. There would be no drugged-out bad guys trying to break into houses to find drug money. There would be no human trafficking; no rape; no domestic violence or robberies. In a perfect world these things would not exist. But our world is not perfect and these things and more do exist. To deny them is to increase your risk of becoming a victim.
To avoid danger is the best self-defense you can learn. More than martial arts self-defense, ground fighting technique or weapons training; avoidance is key. When you learn martial arts, this is typically an element you will be taught. However, for true personal safety, you’ve got to also know exactly what to do in the instance that you cannot avoid danger. Avoidance doesn’t help you if a bad guy has you on the ground. When a situation escalates to such a degree, you’ve got to know what to do if you want to escape unharmed.
Statistics from the Bureau of Justice in the United States have shown that incidences of violent crimes are dropping. Even with a decrease in numbers, no matter where you live, whether a big city, small town or even a rural area, you still need to be careful and vigilant about personal safety. Perhaps it is because of the rise in awareness and common-sense practices that the occurrences of violent crime have fallen to begin with.
Regardless of where the numbers actually stand, it is still your personal right and your personal responsibility to provide for yourself in terms of personal safety. So what exactly does personal safety entail? And how can you know that you are gaining ground when it comes to avoiding being a target for crimes of any kind? First you need to know that violent crimes do take place. This has already been stated; but could be stated a million more times before people actually get it. Rape, for instance, is a violent crime that any woman could find herself a victim of. Rape reaches across ages, races and economic status into the lives of all women. Rape can also reach into the lives of children and even men. The violence of rape can occur anywhere at any time; in public or in your home. Sadly, many reported cases of rape involve an acquaintance, friend, neighbor, or even a relative.
Violence can occur in the workplace or in a bank; on the street or at a friend’s party. The fact is that there are numerous situations in which violent outbursts can occur. The question is, how will you deal with it if you find yourself in such a circumstance? Without the right kind of training, you won’t even know what is about to happen. Sometimes violence can be avoided altogether. When learning true self defense, not just martial arts, you will learn how to read a room. You can become so good at knowing a bad thing is coming that you get out before it does, or prepare for it if you feel you need to protect someone. Oftentimes violence can be handled before it actually starts.
However, there are times when you may need to call upon some sort of skill to get out of a dangerous situation. Martial arts self-defense can be of some benefit; but if you’ve mixed up your training to include quick take-downs and effective techniques, you can end a situation so fast that you will shock even yourself.
We live in a time when self-defense has its place in the world. Years ago, it was our elite military forces that were trained in things like weapons and hand to hand combat. But today, even you can learn how to disarm an opponent pointing a gun at you. Weapons do not have to be fought with weapons; they can also be fought with knowledge and a cool, calm demeanor – along with a swift disarming technique. Click here for information.
To become a pro at true personal safety, you can learn martial arts; but you should add to your arsenal with as much information on self-defense as you can. The sport of martial arts can train your mind, but true personal safety comes only with the advanced training that comes from realistic situations and mental and physical preparedness. Get that and stay safe.
