Martial Arts Styles and Self-Defense

self defense tacticsWhen thinking of self-defense and how to protect oneself, many people instinctively imagine using super powerful martial arts moves against a possible attacker.  This is common and, quite honestly, to be expected.  For decades, we have been trained to believe that through martial arts moves, you can become an ultimate fighting machine that will win out in any street fight or violent situation.

The fact of the matter is that, though there are many martial arts styles that you can learn, no single one makes up the ultimate self-defense technique.  Here is an overview of the most commonly known martial arts styles practiced today.

Tae Kwon Do: Tae Kwon Do seems to be the art of choice, as you can find a studio in almost any strip mall in your neighborhood.  This is what countless parents enlist their child in after school.  This art is a Korean martial arts style which literally means ‘Way of leg and fist’.   In Tae Kwon Do, meditation, sport and combat are all integrated essential principals that form the complete holistic art.  The traditional martial arts moves of punching, kicking and throwing are used; along with joint locking.

Kick Boxing: Kick boxing can be learned in specialized studios and also an just about any local gym.  A great way to stay in shape, kick boxing uses martial arts moves such as kicking mixed in with traditional boxing techniques.  It is thought to be a decent self-defense technique, but is not sufficient in and of itself.  Just because kick boxing involves full body contact does not mean that it mimics the violent situation where self-defense is required.  Click here for Close Combat DVD

Judo: Judo is a martial arts style that hales from Japan.  It has also become widely popular all over the world. The word ‘Judo’ literally means ‘gentleness’ or ’suppleness’.  The martial arts moves typically used in Judo include throwing maneuvers along with choking techniques and joint locking.  The maneuvers are meant to be used to subdue an opponent. It also involves the martial arts moves of powerful kicks and punches; but can also include the use of weapons.

Self DefenseKarate: Karate is the name that most people know, and tend to clump all martial arts into this one martial arts style.  Also from Japan, this style teaches rapid leg thrusts, punching and open handed combat. Karate is a very aggressive style and can be more effective in self-defense.

Jiu Jitsu: Jiu Jitsu or Jujutsu literally translates as ‘way of yielding’. Made more famous due to its use in the widely popular Ultimate Fighter bouts, this art is the original ancient Japanese martial arts style, which was used by the ancient Samurai.  The martial arts moves of Jiu Jitsu involve armed and unarmed combat.
Each of these martial arts styles has something similar to another, and something completely different.   That is why each has been passed down over the years with continued success.  And while the martial arts are wonderful tools to help a person gain insight into their body and also into their mind; martial arts moves alone do not make up self-defense.  See Realistic Self Defense on our Home Page

If you are concerned about your safety in the here and now, frankly, you don’t have time to join a studio and master a martial art style to create a safer environment for yourself.  You need practical answers right now.  Martial arts moves can help you, but you’ve got to know how to think like your attacker.  You’ve got to know what another person may be looking to do to you in order to counteract their violence with powerful stopping actions.  If you do not want to be a victim, you’ve got to take charge of your own safety now and learn what works and what doesn’t.  See what Close Combat teaches you here.

Violence is out there.  Knowing that and actually acknowledging it is the first step to finding ways to live more safely.  Of course you do not want to learn how to fight so you can just play around with techniques you’ve seen used in MMA fights.  You want to be able to stand up to an attack if you face a situation that you cannot diffuse without force.

Sometimes being forceful is the only way to save a life.  When that life is yours or that of a loved one, chances are you’ll be thankful for the real and effective self defense tactics you have taken the time to learn.
