Fight or Flight and Other Options

You have heard of the element of fight or flight that is built right in to our human nature. This is how we have been created to deal with stressful situations. When faced with perceived danger, our body springs into motion and sends adrenaline out to assist the fight for safety. However, this adrenaline rush isn’t something that we are accustomed to feeling. Ever. The closest you have ever come to feeling the adrenaline rush of combat is likely the biggest roller coaster of your life. And for some, that’s not very exciting.

The fact of the matter is that if you were to face a real danger such as an attack of any sort, you cannot be sure at this point in time what your response will be; will you fight, or will your body go into flight mode? Oh wait, there’s one more option you could fall into..you could freeze. This is something that does occur, and is very natural. So if you don’t know what your natural response to the adrenaline dump will be; what good does it do to train in martial arts styles or learn martial arts moves for self defense?

Just in case the answer isn’t completely clear, we’ll go into it. Remember how much I like football, right? In my blog last week I talked about how it’s not the best team that wins on any given Sunday; it is the team that plays the best. Taking that to self defense terms; the more you know, the more you stack the odds in your favor that you will handle the adrenaline rush you are sure to get in a stressful situation.

When faced with danger, your heart rate increases and you begin to tremble. With regular training in any of the martial arts styles geared for fighting, you can begin to teach your body how to respond to stress. There are certain martial arts styles that are more suitable for fighting; and some that are geared mainly for sport. To train your mind and body for self defense, you need to learn martial arts moves that are easy to remember and set up to do damage to your attacker.

And more than just moving martial arts moves, you’ve got to be in a place where you practice with someone who takes your training as seriously as you do. That doesn’t mean you have to take a class; you can learn everything you need to stay safe through my DVD program. But, you must have someone to practice with. Talk to a friend or relative and spend time thinking about what your body will do under the extreme stress of an attack. When you do this on a regular basis, you have added an essential tool for your safety into your self defense toolbox. Handle the adrenaline and you will handle your attacker.
