Encore! Encore!
I said there were plenty more weapons, and here they are! In all my years of studying and teaching military self defense, I have never underestimated the value of tools. And tools are whatever you can find. Tools can be your fists or feet; it can be the martial arts training that you have received, or the training you have taken in military self defense. All of the actual moves are great; but again, if you need a weapon, you need a weapon!
The key to your safety may lie in the keys you carry. Everyone knows that a key can be used to poke; but in fear, you may forget to actually do that. Keys can also be used as a flail. When you’re frightened, this may be a more acceptable movement to your body’s natural instinct to use large muscle movements. To use a key as a weapon, hold it facing out between your index and middle fingers. As a flail, keys attached to a lanyard (rope) are perfect. Just hold the end of the rope and whip the keys at a sensitive area on your opponent. If you use this method, move quickly and don’t be overly surprised if your attacker grabs your keys. Think through a possible scenario (a common military self defense point) so you know what to do if this happens to you.
Just as effective as a book is a magazine or even a newspaper. Rolled up, a magazine can fight off a knife to some degree. It can also be used to strike sensitive areas. It is important to remember that force is the key in using this type of an item.
Purses, briefcases and book bags offer you a place to store your necessities; but they also make a great weapon. The heavier the bag, the better it serves to swing at an attacker. Accuracy is not great with this weapon, and you stand the chance of the item being grabbed from you. Again, thinking through any scenario is the best way to prevent being caught off guard. Bags and briefcases can also be used to shield you from strikes or from a knife.
Sticks and stones may break bones….You know the saying. In this instance, no, using a stick or a rock in self defense may not really break bones. However, these two things are ideal for self defense. If you have an umbrella or a cane, don’t be afraid to swing it like a bat. These items also feature a hook sometimes. With martial arts training, you can learn how to use the hook to work some wrist or ankle traps on your opponent.
You don’t have to be an expert at martial arts or self defense to protect yourself. Weapons can do a lot for you. However, I will also state here that training is always important. If you want to know how to use weapons wisely, you will need practice. You can do this alone or with a partner; but you should do it.
