Be a Know-it-All

Combat TrainingSun Tzu said “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Nobody likes a Know-it-All, that’s true. But when it comes to your self defense and personal safety, you have to be what you have to be. I love to say “It is what it is”. It doesn’t get any truer than that. So, this is what it is and if you want to stay as safe as possible, it is important to become a Know-it-all.

Let’s step back. You may be in the midst of learning from self defense videos the moves and techniques to save your hide in a fight. You may learn martial arts as a way to gain confidence and insight into the art of fighting. This is all well and good. It is all necessary, actually. But when you learn martial arts; or when you study from any self defense videos, you learn technique; not mindset.

The mindset I’m referring to is one where you know yourself as well as your enemy. Self defense, as I’ve stated before, is just like combat. In order to win in combat, it is essential that you know what you have learned in terms of self defense. It is just as essential that you know what you are up against.

Breaking this down to the very basic level, this means that a woman who regularly jogs through her neighborhood would be prepared mentally to be grabbed by the hair. Why? Because many attackers will use the ponytail as a handle with which to throw a woman off balance. This means that when you come home at night, you lock the door behind you; you don’t go to bed without making sure all windows and doors are locked. Why? Because the bad guy will come through any opening you leave him.

You can learn martial arts. You can study with a class or with self defense videos. But to really be as safe as you want to be, you have to learn to see the big picture so you can win any battle.
