A Night at the Improv

self defenceSince pretty much the very beginning of martial arts and fighting, weapons were a part of the picture. Weapons are necessary at times even for those who have mastered their particular martial arts techniques. In fact, many advanced martial arts techniques are all about the weapon. Luckily, you don’t have to actually master use of weapons like swords or nun chucks in order to use weapons in self defense.

I have talked about weapons before; but I came across an old list from years ago, so I’m going to talk about weapons again. Some people learn self defense in a class; some learn from a self defense DVD. As long as you’re learning, it doesn’t matter how you do it. With a self defense DVD, just as with a live class, you need to put in the practice time in order to get self defense moves ingrained into your brain. You want all of the information you learn on a self defense DVD or in a class to become second nature to you.

Even when you know what moves to utilize to diffuse a situation, or fight if you need to, knowing what you can use as a weapon and how to use any particular item is also an essential piece of the self defense puzzle. So let’s take a look at some weapons that are readily accessible to pretty much anyone at just about any time. You can feel confident knowing that you have at least one of these items either on you or near you no matter where you are.

They say that the pen is mightier than the sword. This can be true in more than one sense. I’ve talked about the pen before; but it deserves another mention. Almost everyone carries a pen in their purse or pocket. This item is portable, small and makes a mean weapon when used appropriately. A pen can be used to poke at vulnerable soft tissue places. Aim for the eyes, throat, groin and solar plexus (which is the pit of the stomach).

These Boots are made for…fighting! Your shoes can be your most valuable asset in the event of a fight or attack. High heeled shoes can be taken off and the heel becomes your “pen” so to speak. Boots or other shoes can be great kicking tools; but can also be taken off and put on hands. This is especially useful if your opponent has a knife. A shoe on the blocking hand can protect you from getting cut.

I love a good read for more than one reason. A hardback book makes a great weapon and is an item that many people keep handy. In this weapon lies the element of surprise. There isn’t a person out there who would suspect you would use that book under your arm to put a hurt on them! A book acts as a shield, with the pages actually absorbing some of the shock from a hit. The corners of a book can be poked forcefully at an attacker (focus on the face). A book can also be used as the tool you hit with. Not only can this protect your hands, but it will also extend your reach.

As always, there are many more everyday items that can become improvised weapons. As long as you’re aware of the possibilities, you can make do.
