Your Self Defense – Strength vs. Savvy

When it comes to keeping yourself safe, do you think your self defense tactics are enough to stop someone bigger and stronger than you?  Can you effectively fight off someone, say, 100 lbs heavier than you and on a mission to get what they want?

I cannot say that it doesn’t matter one bit if you are weak.  But weaker than your opponent doesn’t have to mean that you lose in a fight or lose something important to you…or lose your life.  However, in order to win out over a larger, stronger opponent, you must master some self defense tactics that will get you away from their grasp right away.  The last thing you want is a long, drawn out fight on your hands.

Many people set out to learn self defense tactics through martial arts.  With something like a martial arts DVD, you can learn great things.  You can learn balance, focus, stamina, etc.  What you can’t learn from a martial arts DVD– at least not very quickly, is how to win in a fight against someone who could put you down with one good punch if they wanted to.

When you are faced with danger in this way, you need to be effective.  That means savvy comes into play over strength.  You need to know what parts of the body are more susceptible; and you need to know what sort of weapons (even fingers and feet) are used for what part of the body.  This doesn’t sound like a strength issue to me…does it?

Knowing where to strike and with what to strike is your defense against a larger opponent.  Your moves don’t have to be precise; they don’t have to be delivered with monstrous force; just whatever force you can really put behind it.  I’ve said before that the elbow is a very strong part of your body.  So if you can use that instead of your hands to strike at your opponent, you are better off.  This is a savvy way of using what strength you have.  This is particularly important for women to learn because they will almost always face a larger, stronger opponent.

There are many ways in which you can use your wits to fight off strength.  The key is to know what to do and to act quickly.  That is why I preach…yes, preach, that it is essential to practice self defense regularly.  Not with a martial arts DVD; with something like combat training or hand to hand combat training.  The moves that you learn from a program like mine are easy to learn and highly effective.  If you master those and then want to move on to learn martial arts; go for it!

I will leave you with this.  In the case of Chelsea King and Amber Dubois; two Southern California teens killed by the same monster, there was another victim. In between the two killings was a girl who jogged in the same area as one of the teens.  As she jogged the trail, her attacker tackled her and threw her to the ground.  She shook her shoulders harshly as she feared he would rape her.  Thinking quickly, the jogger, Candice Moncayo, threw an elbow punch that hit her attacker squarely in the nose.  This was luckily enough to get her a moment to free herself and run away…and it saved the woman’s life.

It is sad that any woman, any person, would have to endure what some have had to.  My heart goes out to the families of the girls who could not fight for themselves.  It is my sincere hope that, through reading this, your story may be different.  Learn how to use skill to fight off strength.  It really can make a difference.
