The Most Important Move
If I were to ask you what self defense move is the most important one, what would you say? Would you think back to the self defense videos you have learned from and picture a particular kick or hand strike? Chances are I’m spot on with that assumption. But the real answer to this question is that the most important move you will employ is the first move you employ. Make sense?
Here’s the thing; when you learn martial arts or self defense, whether through a class or through self defense videos, the focus is on the many different ways you can get out of a sticky situation. So of course you want to drill and practice and hone your skills. But there’s more to your self defense than any particular strike. There is also the mindset with which you approach self defense in the first place.
Sometimes you will utilize your skills as offensive moves; and sometimes you will use them as defensive strikes. The key is to gain awareness of the skills that you have at your disposal and learning how to discern, quickly, which moves to employ right away. The first move that you use is the most important.
The reason why your first move is the most important is because it sets the tone for the entire situation. If you choose to try and talk down your attacker, or comply with their requests, or decide to put up one heck of a fight; the decision is the starting point from which all of your further moves will follow.
Remember that you are in control of your own personal safety. When you familiarize yourself with the many scenarios in which you may need to use self defense, you are better prepared to defend yourself against any of them. When you are well versed in the skills that you learn in self defense videos, you will know instinctively the way to end an altercation quickly.
