The Beauty of Combatives

In training for personal safety, there are two main roads that people tend to take.  One is to train in the martial arts.  Training in martial arts is good for body and mind; I learned a lot from the martial arts training that I have received over the years.

Combat training is the other road that people head down in order to learn how to defend themselves.  Combat self defense utilizes different techniques than the martial arts; and also requires (or teaches) a different mindset.  For one, in many forms of martial arts, there is a love for everyone – even the enemy.  Combat training does not touch on love for thy neighbor when that person is the enemy trying to harm or kill you.

The point here is that combat self defense, while effective, has been called brutal.  For some, it is too much so.  For me, I would rather ensure the safety of my family and myself than show respect for a human who has only mal intent for me and mine. The skills that you learn in combat training are effective; but even more effective is how you develop your mind.

It has been said time and time again that fighting is 90% mental and 10% technique.  This is an absolute truth; but one that many people may just miss if they don’t pay close attention to their self defense training.  I would like to take the opportunity to remind you that self defense is not a sport.  It is not pretty.  It is indeed violent at times.  If you cannot wrap your head around the fact that it isn’t just combat self defense that can be brutal; but violence itself, then you will have a hard time protecting yourself if the time ever comes when you need to.
