Mythbusters: Domestic Violence Edition Part I

One of the big problems we have in regards to Domestic Violence is that there is still a huge lack of awareness.  Where there is a lack of awareness in terms of anything related to personal safety and self defense training, there is a problem.  Here, we are going to take a look at some of the myths people hold about Domestic Violence, and some true numbers to debunk those myths.

MYTH #1: Domestic Violence is a rare occurrence that affects only a few people.

FACT: National studies estimate that 3 to 4 million women are beaten each year in the United States alone. In fact, the FBI estimates that a woman is beaten every 15 seconds!  Domestic violence beats out any other cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the U.S. and approximately 1,500 women are murdered as a result of domestic violence each year in the United States.

MYTH #2: Domestic Violence belongs to the poor, uneducated and minority families.

FACT: Studies of domestic violence have consistently shown that it is not partial.  Domestic violence occurs among all types of people, regardless of income, profession, region, ethnicity, educational level or race.

MYTH #3: Domestic Violence occurs in isolated instances only.

FACT: This is believed because oftentimes the abuse is not physical.  Battery is not just a physical attack, however.  Domestic abuse includes multiple tactics on the part of the abuser and typically occurs time and time again.  Many times, there is a pattern to the abuse.  Some of the tactics used by abusers include intimidation, threats, economic deprivation, isolation and psychological and sexual abuse. Physical violence is just one of these tactics.  By using more than just physical force, an abuser actually gains more control over their victim.

These are just three of the myths surrounding domestic violence.  I will cover more in a later post.  The point is that what you think you know about violence may not be correct.  While this is an issue, the remedy is easy; get some self defense training. While there are some forms of self defense training that may be more helpful than others; it would be good to even get involved in martial arts if that’s what works for you.

Martial arts can sometimes blend with self defense and help you learn to protect yourself.  It provides great exercise and other health benefits as well.  Regardless if it martial arts or hand to hand combat training; there is nothing like taking control of your personal safety through awareness and skill.
