More Tips for College Students…and all women!
First, I want to say that what I post here for college students could easily be used for any woman who ventures out of the house for work or socializing. Self defense is for everyone; but the interesting thing is that, while men and women can utilize the same self defense tactics, they may not encounter the same issues. In fact, I can almost assure you 100% that men and women will face incidences completely different for the most part.
Men would utilize their self defense training (sometimes misspelled self defence training) to ward off possible fights by a wanna-be Alpha Male at a party or a bar. A woman’s first concern is typically to not get raped.
Any instance of violent crime needs to be avoided. This is why we tell college students to make friends the very first day of class and find out where everyone parks. Set up groups that can walk to and from class together, especially at night.
When interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim, criminals have reported one very interesting characteristic that women may not think of. The characteristic is hairstyle. That’s right! Men have always loved a woman’s hair; but this is far different than the age old fascination men have with hair. This draw comes from the fact that a ponytail or braid gives a criminal something to grab onto.
If you’ve ever had your hair pulled, you know it’s really a way to put you down or get your attention. In the case of an attack, it is definitely meant to put you down on the ground. So what can you do in terms of self defense to get away from an attack if your ponytail is grabbed?
I love this one, because you can have some fun throwing your attacker for a loop. If you are grabbed by the hair, all you need to do is raise up your elbow and swing it to his face. The elbow is one of the strongest parts of your body, and can do some damage. At the very least, you are going to throw him off balance with a blow from the elbow.
To deliver an elbow punch, you must turn slightly to the side. So once you have struck with the elbow, continue turning towards your attacker and throw a nice kick to the groin. If the elbow punch did not earn you release from his grip, certainly the kick will do so. At that point, as always, you run.
Some self defense people say that you should carry pepper spray (I agree) and show it if someone is coming at you, while announcing boldly “I have pepper spray!”…I say just USE it. Of course, as a victim of violent crime myself, I think bad guys should pay for their actions with realistic consequences like pepper spray in the eyes.
If, by some chance, your attacker does not easily let go of your hair; what you do is reach up and smack his hand with an open palm. The goal is to smack hard INTO your head. Because his knuckles are folded under, the blow will cause quite a bit of pain to them and he will want to let go. Again, your second move is always a kick to the groin; and the third is to run to safety.
