Make the Entire Meal

Martial arts self defense classes can be found in just about every city in America.  I love martial arts; and think there is great benefit in learning any type of martial arts.  But I’m also an avid student of self defense….all things self defense.  And so I was thinking about why it is that I have misgivings about some of the martial arts self defense classes that people engage in.  Here’s what I came up with…

Your personal safety is like a 7-course meal.  Not to say that there are exactly that many pieces to the personal safety meal; but you get the point.  Sometimes, people will take part in one day rape clinics; or take a martial arts class for a few months and feel that they have learned enough martial arts self defense to protect themselves aptly.

I think the problem with this type of learning is that one can falsely come to the conclusion that they few escapes they have learned in a controlled setting will be sufficient enough training to stay safe in the event of an attack.  This is like making a meal for your family and serving only bread.  While bread is a great start to any meal; it is just the beginning, wouldn’t you say?

When you sit down to eat, you crave more than bread.  You may want a salad; and definitely want some meat to come across your plate at some point in time.  Your self defense training is no different; the actual martial arts moves or self defense techniques you learn are only one part of the whole equation.  If you take a single class, watch a single video or partake in only minimal training, you are left wanting.  You are being fed only part of the meal that you need to be well nourished.

It is important that you always remember to maintain training.  Even if you carry pepper spray for protection…do you know how to use it properly?  Are you testing your vial every now and then to make sure it still works properly?  Are you visualizing scenarios in which you may need to use your martial arts self defense skills?  Are you staying off the phone and paying attention to your surroundings?

Don’t get the wrong idea about your personal safety.  Maintaining a good training regimen is the best way to ensure you are staying up on your skills and fully able to protect yourself in a pinch.
