K.I.S.S.
If you’ve never hear this acronym; you’ve missed out! K.I.S.S. is all about Keeping it Simple. What you want to add for that last word is up to you. The way I learned it was “Keep it Simple, Stupid!”. I don’t like calling anyone stupid; and don’t consider myself to be dim in any way; so I leave out the last “S”. It’s just a technicality anyway.
Keeping it simple is a very real necessity. Bruce Lee himself concluded that effective self defense comes from a system that is simple. After conducting research of various styles of martial arts, he found that many of them had far too many martial arts moves to use in response to a single attack. For instance, to combat being grabbed by the arms; one would be taught multiple martial arts moves that could be used in response.
Instead of learning twenty different martial arts moves for one type of attack, Lee believed that one simple but direct solution could work better. This is what I like about combat training. While martial arts training is great, and martial arts moves can be effective for use as self defense; there is little like combat training.
In combat training, you learn moves that involve large muscle groups. This makes each move easier to remember. And because self defense taught in combat training is too specific, you gain skills that will put your attacker on the ground and you on the run towards safety.
Simplicity is indeed key to personal safety. Crime is simple; attackers pretty much utilize the same techniques time and time again. Combat training is geared towards fighting off these “tried and true” attacks. By keeping your training simple, you give yourself the exact skills necessary to fight off what an attacker will throw your way. Complex training programs and too many moves are simply too much.
