College Students and Self Defense Training
All around the United States, young adults are preparing to embark on a new phase in life. Heading off to college is exciting for most college students. They are thinking about their new classes and the new friends they will make. The mind of the new college student is typically on pretty much anything else EXCEPT the issue of self defense training.
I personally believe that our young folks should begin self defense training at a young age and never stop training. Hand to hand combat training is something you can pursue for your entire life and still come up with new ways to protect yourself.
The parents of college students, female students in particular, may be the ones who consider self defense training for their daughters; but most of the time, the student never ends up getting any decent hand to hand combat training. What I find is that most girls take part in a one-time clinic. This is great because it at least raises awareness. However, as I’ve said, hand to hand combat training is something that should be ongoing. This way, the person receiving the training really can remember what to do in case of an attack.
I’m going to give a couple of tips here on my blog for girls who plan to be out with friends or who may have night classes that lead them through dark parking lots. These tips can work for anyone who finds themselves in the situation of being grabbed.
Situation #1 – you are walking alone and someone grabs your arm. What do you do?
Your first instinct may be to yank your arm in an attempt to free yourself. The person grabbing you knows this, and will thus get a pretty good grip on you. So, catch him off guard and instead of yanking AWAY, move IN towards the grab. In all likelihood, you will be grabbed from behind. So moving towards your attacker will involve you turning around.
When you turn around, if there is something in your free hand, you could swing it at your attacker. However, this is a move that can be deflected. What I suggest is that you swing whatever you have in your hand, if you can, AND throw a nice kick to the groin at the same time. Doing both things at once distracts your attacker and throws him off mentally.
As soon as you are freed, you run as fast as you can to a place where people will be present. Period. Don’t grab your phone to call your best friend, your mom, or even 911. RUN to where people are physically present. Once there, you can call the police to report the attack.
College can be fun and engaging; but can also be dangerous for the student who doesn’t know how to protect themselves. Make the most of your college days by taking time out to also study hand to hand combat training or self defense training.
