  • Be a Know-it-All

Sun Tzu said “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

  • The Power of Words

I’ve talked before about bullying in schools and how words do indeed have the power to hurt. If you are a parent of a school-aged child, you know the pain felt when bullying occurs. What’s great about martial arts techniques is that they give an individual the power to fight off an attacker.

  • Yet another tool for Personal Safety

In keeping safe at home and on the go, there are more ways than one to go about it. Of course, as much as I recommend using any tool that is legally at your disposal, I believe that there is always a need for self defense training.

  • The Reason Why

I like to keep up on stories around the country in which self defense training (often misspelled self defence training) could have come in handy. I will never say what a victim should have done; I just find it necessary to look for glaring reasons why it is helpful to learn self defense; or at least some martial arts moves!

  • A Closer Look at Pepper Spray

There are many aspects to self defense that we don’t automatically think about. Many people question which of the martial arts styles serves best for self defense. People question whether ANY martial arts styles makes up the ideal form of self defense.

  • No More Mr. Nice Guy

I find it interesting how many people are opposed to violence. Now, don’t get me wrong; I certainly don’t walk into a new place and punch the first person who looks at me! However, as stated in an earlier post, only 2 percent of the population will actually use force to protect themselves from violence because they are so opposed to it!

  • Suess-ims for Self Defense

Anyone who reads my blog knows pretty well the benefits of learning self defense techniques. You can learn some moves from martial arts DVD programs; you can learn from effective self defense techniques from my combatives course.

  • Zero Tolerance Policies in School

School is a part of life that everyone must go through. Sadly, school bullying is a part of most school in every country. Bullies exist outside of the schools, on the streets; hence the need for self defense – so why would it be a surprise that these behaviors start as early as grade school?

  • Innocent Until Proven Guilty

When you initially hear this term – innocent until proven guilty – you may assume it refers to the “bad guy” in a court case. If you have been involved in an altercation in which you had to use force to defend yourself and you have engaged in hand to hand combat training or some sort of martial arts training, this statement may actually apply to YOU!

  • The True Value of Self Defense Training

We always extol the great benefits of self defense training in the obvious ways. Personal protection is indeed a very important factor to a long and happy life. Because I have been affected by crime in a personal way, I will always believe that this is the first and foremost benefit of learning combat self defense.

  • Trapped – Escaping from the Trunk of a Car

We live in a time when criminals have taken to placing victims in trunks. This could be the trunk of your own vehicle after a carjacking, or could be the trunk of their car in an attempted kidnapping. It is important for all people to know what to do if they were to ever find themselves in this dark and scary place.

  • Size Matters – or Does it?

When we’re talking about fighting and self defense tactics, it is an assumption among novices that size matters. A smaller, weaker person is doomed to be the victim of a larger, stronger attacker. Looking at statistics for rape, robbery and other assault, you can see that this assumption is also alive and well in the minds of the bad guys.

  • Encore! Encore!

I said there were plenty more weapons, and here they are! In all my years of studying and teaching military self defense, I have never underestimated the value of tools. And tools are whatever you can find. Tools can be your fists or feet; it can be the martial arts training that you have received, or the training you have taken in military self defense.

  • A Night at the Improv

Since pretty much the very beginning of martial arts and fighting, weapons were a part of the picture. Weapons are necessary at times even for those who have mastered their particular martial arts techniques. In fact, many advanced martial arts techniques are all about the weapon.

  • Offense vs. Defense

It’s that time of year that I love oh so much. The time when teams from all around the country are showing what they’ve got; and individual players vie for their spot on the team they want to play for. You’ve got it! Time to pull out those chicken wings and watch some football!

  • Tune in and Turn On

So much of what we focus on when we take a self defense course or learn martial arts is about physical movement. Indeed, it is the actual strikes and kicks that deliver a blow to your attacker. Indeed, there is no self defense without physical movement.

  • Develop your Assets

When you are studying martial arts or self defense, you gain valuable assets – the actual martial arts moves or self defense techniques that you will use to stay protected in a violent situation. However, the effectiveness of your assets is not only dependent upon the individual moves; it is dependent on you and your overall power.

  • K.I.S.S.

If you’ve never hear this acronym; you’ve missed out! K.I.S.S. is all about Keeping it Simple. What you want to add for that last word is up to you. The way I learned it was “Keep it Simple, Stupid!”. I don’t like calling anyone stupid; and don’t consider myself to be dim in any way [...]

  • The Beauty of Combatives

In training for personal safety, there are two main roads that people tend to take.  One is to train in the martial arts.  Training in martial arts is good for body and mind; I learned a lot from the martial arts training that I have received over the years.
    Combat training is the [...]

  • The Most Important Move

If I were to ask you what self defense move is the most important one, what would you say?  Would you think back to the self defense videos you have learned from and picture a particular kick or hand strike?  Chances are I’m spot on with that assumption.  But the real [...]

  • Make the Entire Meal

Martial arts self defense classes can be found in just about every city in America.  I love martial arts; and think there is great benefit in learning any type of martial arts.  But I’m also an avid student of self defense….all things self defense.  And so I was thinking about why [...]

  • The Last Samurai

Last night, I watched the movie The Last Samurai for the first time.  Yes, it’s an old movie; and I’m not a huge Tom Cruise fan (which is probably why I never took the time to see it when it came out).  Anyway, regardless of my affinity for the star, I have [...]

  • 10 Ways to Avoid Carjacking

When people talk about self defense issues, they usually focus on training in martial arts techniques or some other form of physical activity.  It makes sense that we conjure up images of strong kicks and strikes when the words “self defense” are spoken; as the term is usually associated with martial arts [...]

  • Hand Strikes: Open or Closed?

When talking about martial arts and martial arts self defense, there is a rather longstanding debate about the hand strike.  Is it better to strike with an open hand or a closed fist?  Over the years, as more martial arts styles have become main stream, the training in regards to the hand strike [...]

  • Domestic Violence: Have a Plan

It would be nice to say “Don’t be in an abusive relationship” and have that be that; but life is not so easy.  Because life is not easy, and people have issues with self worth, domestic violence is a part of our society that will likely be around for a long time.  [...]

  • What Domestic Abuse Looks Like

I first want to say that the first step in stopping the cycle of domestic violence is to learn the warning signs and acknowledge what may be happening to you or a loved one.  No one deserves to live in fear of anyone; mostly a person they love.  We tend to think [...]

  • Mythbusters: Domestic Violence Edition Part I

One of the big problems we have in regards to Domestic Violence is that there is still a huge lack of awareness.  Where there is a lack of awareness in terms of anything related to personal safety and self defense training, there is a problem.  Here, we are going to take a [...]

  • The Easiest Way To Learn Self Defense

It does not take much time on the news for us to realize that crime is on the rise and if we want to avoid becoming a victim we need to learn how to defend ourselves. While some choose pepper spray or guns others want a more hands on approach that is [...]

  • Self Defense Is More Than Just Moves But Intelligence As Well

There are so many self defense courses out there ranging in a whole world of styles and each is packed full of moves and techniques to fight off attackers. Some instructors though will teach not only the physical self defense tactics needed to fight off an attack but the psychological ploys that [...]

  • Learn Self Defense With A DVD

No matter where you live the nightly news is filled with stories of crime against the average citizen. The time has come when you can no longer afford to say that will never happen to you since it only happens to the other guy. The statistics point to the fact that you [...]
