Submission Grappling

With the wide spread popularity of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) there has been a lot of talk about grappling, and how important it is for mixed martial arts (MMA). The fact is submission grappling has been part of combat sports for a long time and today’s fighters are simply experiencing it in its latest form. Both Greco-Roman and catch wrestling have grappling, and so do Russian Sambo and Greek Pankration. Submission grappling is a major part of both ground fighting and clinch or stand-up fighting, and can be very effective at ending a match quickly regardless of an opponent’s size or strength.

In hand-to-hand combat fighters can use a variety of submission grappling techniques. While all techniques are designed to make an opponent submit, due to pain or fear of further injury they all work in different ways. Compression locks can cause intense pain to an area of muscle or bone, and joint locks do the same on the vulnerable joints of the body. Chokeholds can be used to strangle an opponent until they’re unconscious in a match or until death if it is a self defense situation. While every martial art has its own techniques all attack the same sensitive areas and the only limitations are the rules of the sport.

With different rules and backgrounds each combat sport has a slightly different take on submission grappling. With Jujutsu which the Japanese samurai designed for actual combat the techniques are designed to deal with armed and armored opponents, and can be very lethal. Judo fighters wear gi’s and use throws to take an opponent to the ground and then use arm locks and chokes to get the submission. Sambo is similar to Judo, but no gi’s are worn and leg locks are employed more often. In BJJ which is also very similar to Judo, but emphasizes ground fighting techniques can be done with and without a gi.

Submission grappling has been with us since the dawn of time, and can be found in many martial arts around the world. Until you grapple with an opponent up close and personal it is just a game, but once you get hold of him or her it is a fight. They can ignore the points, and they can ignore the clock, but they can’t ignore the pain for long. Submission grappling is key to victory.

  1. i will look up some more stuff and post another comment tomorrow.
meanwhile, there is one thing i cant figure out.
what is that two hit combination that is supposed to shatter an attackers jaw, every time?, if captain chris could please tell me what it is, it would be very valuable.

  2. armbar+push
less lethal approach. if someone grabs you with and arm and reaches across to your shoulder to push: you can see the figure Z that is made with your bodies, just push on the back if you want to get him away from you. if you want to armbar and tiger claw, just push with the other hand. if a weapon is brought in the mix, then use both your hands on his outstretched hand and do a wristlock. after that you want to snap the arm like a pretzel rod or do a takedown. either way, they get a busted wrist.

  3. 15 jeet kune do to counter a straight punch:

the straight punch can be so nerve wrecking on the untrained human that you cant afford to screw the counter move up. i had to post this one by itself in order to avoid making my post too long and boring.
if you want a visual picture of the technique then go to hardcore JKD.com/techniques, you can see how its done. i could not paste to picture so here is how i explain it. as he is throwing the punch, STEP OFF-LINE AND REACH DOWN HIS WAY. IF HE USES THE LEFT ARM (HIS LEFT)TO DO IT, YOU USE YOUR LEFT AND REACH DOWN HIS WAY BLENDING YOUR ARM WITH HIS. HIS MOMENTUM WILL CAUSE HIM TO FALL FORWARD AND YOU CAN LAND A TIGER CLAW WITH WHATEVER HAND YOU WANT.

NOTE: if he is throwing a fist and gets overextended, just grab him by his punching fist, and tiger claw the face. the message you get from him is “go ahead and stick your arm out for me so i can ram your face into the pavement without much effort.” I have heard that the gash it leaves is quite painful. not to mention dangerous.

    armbar+face ram
    stomps,
    hand yokes,
    shin scrapes,
alternating verticle chop to counter a boxer
    groin blow tiger claw
arm swing + tiger claw to counter a ghillotine choke.

  4. continued:
6)the diagonal collarbone chop: my motto is that i order for him to attack you, he has to put his hands on you, in order to do that, he has to expose the collarbone, deliver a huge ridge hand chop and it will shatter. the only time you will see him after that will be in a hospital bed. i havent done it before but captain chris says it works fantastic.

    7) if he is unarmed but simply too big, deliver a snapping whipkick to his knees and walk away. it will buckle and you will take the guy out of commission. NOTE: YOU NEVER WANT TO DO THIS IF HE HAS A GUN!

    8) if you apply the finger dart and whipkick the way the site shows it, you can at least stop his momentum.

9)tiger claw: just stick your hand in his face and push. it will hurt if you dig your fingers in. if he posts up with a leg and you cant push him back, you can at least get his head driven back to open up the neck for a horizontal windpipe chop.

    10) palm strikes: hey captain chris, if you are looking at this, i dont know if the palm strike to the nose will kill the man or not. if it does, you have solved your problem, of not, then you have created a large opening- a brokn nose is very painful, i have had my nose busted before and believe me it hurts.

11)knee thrusts: if he gets too close for you to use effective hand strikes and you cant kick him, what better time to use the knee. just lift it into the air and into your target. take out whatever you hit. this is ideal for improper takedowns, bull rush charges, bear hugs, if you get him in a ground and pound, or if you have him in a guillotine front choke, etc.

    12) elbow spike to counter a rear choke: if he gets you in a chinlock like in pro wrestling, just rear elbow him agiain and again.
13)if his chin is low enough, you can just cock your elbow a little bit ahead of your chest and whale it into him from low to high. it is just like using a gun butt to whack a bully in the head.

    14) if he is the same size as you, and gets you by the throat, just rip across, swinging your hand over his arms, and bop him as hard as you can in the head. i have always called the head, the bodys bowling ball, because of how heavy it is. his head will bounce back if you hit him with your entire bodyweight behind the blow.

  5. the techniques i figured out are as follows.
lets put this system against the MCMAP program.
this list is long so i would ask that you bear with me. i’ll just do them 5 per post.
what techniques do i refer to: let me run you down with each one.
1)to disorient your attacker, finger dart him.

2)to apply more force to the technique: use finger jabs
    3) to counter a headbutt, use an uppercut chinjab,
    4) if you are attacked from behind, double chinjab,
5)if he decides to push your chest= downwardedge of hand to hack that off and deliver a horizontal chop to his windpipe or return focus to his head and beat on him with chops till he drops.

  6. Like captain chris said, in a street fight there are no rules. you have to do whatever you can to survive. i have been a dedicated student of captain chris’s work and skills for nearly 6 years now. and just like him, i went and researched each style in the book. i recommend the same stuff that they teach in the close combat training system to any situation. go all out. when all is said and done, you will do whatever you can to make it out alive.

  7. lets just compare all the combat sports of the world. boxing, jeet kune do, taekwondo, ninjutsu, and so on. they all prohibit techniques like: headbutting, eye gouging, biting, spitting, rabbit punching, fish hooking, hair pulling, hits to the groin, hitting the small of the back, finger strikes or rakes, and vice gripping to be fouls. the fact is that these are all close combat techniques. everything that they use in the close combat syllabus.
