Mixed Martial Arts Schools
People might not like it, but when it comes to money people are more than willing to change. It is amazing how quickly people will change to fit in though. After the September 11, 2001 attacks for example many people became homeland security experts. Nobody had heard the title used until President Bush announced the new officer, but there were all kinds of terrorism and homeland security experts offering their services and years of experience.
Now some of these experts might have a lot of knowledge and might be very helpful, but if you contacted them prior to 2001, they would probably tell you they were security consultants, contractors, or even national security consultants. This same thing happened to the martial arts industry. Individuals who had been teaching Judo, Karate, and Tae Kwon Do reinvented themselves as mixed martial arts instructors teaching at established martial arts schools. Prior to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) almost none of these people even talked about mixed martial arts.
If you have trained in more then one style of martial arts you’re a mixed martial artist. It is that simple. In most competitions you can’t use techniques from another style due to restrictions. What might be legal in a Kung Fu tournament might not be legal in a kick boxing match and sports like wrestling or boxing are strictly grappling or striking. In a mixed martial arts match you can use just about any technique you want and only the most lethal moves have been excused for safety reasons. Prior to the popularity of UFC and similar competitions a school might offer several different styles of martial arts, but to keep up with the trend they became mixed martial arts schools. Despite being very similar many people began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu even though it isn’t that much different than Judo. Most people just go with the trend.
At one point it was all Karate and then everyone wanted to learn Aikido and some people even wanted to train as ninjas. Wing Chun became popular thanks to Bruce Lee, even though he studied several styles. Some people will change styles every few years based on what is popular at the time whether or not it works in a self defense situation. Mixed martial arts schools are just feeding the demand, but you’re smarter than that though. Find what style you enjoy and start training.
