Jiu Jitsu Gis
Well, for those of you who are wondering if your old Judo gi will hold up against a Jiu Jitsu gi it probably will. Though many people like to think Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a new martial arts style it is really a subtype of Judo. The fact that BJJ emphasizes ground fighting more so is one of several points where the combat sports depart from each other. Still the short answer to any questions you might have is yes your gi for Judo will be just fine for BJJ. It might not be as flashy, but it accomplishes the point.
Jiu Jitsu Gis were born out of a necessity for good workout gear, and were originally Japanese kimonos which are T-shaped, straight-lined robes that fall to the ankle, with collars and wide, full-length sleeves. The word kimono means “something worn,” and has been used to refer to all clothing. The Gracie’s Judo instructor in Brazil was among the first to be using the gi design which is now common place in martial arts those the Gracie boys probably saw him were cut down kimonos as well.
If you’re going to buy Jiu Jitsu Gis you have to know what to look for in a gi. First now all styles use the same type of gi. Those who practice Aikido use a more traditional style of clothing that dates back to the days of samurai. Tae Kwon Do and Karate both use a more light weight type of gi because there is no grappling. Modern battlefield combatives there is no need for a gi and is often done in short and t-shirts or military uniforms.
Jiu Jitsu Gis have thicker lapels, and are designed to hold up in ground fighting. Some manufactures claim there is a different between BJJ and Judo Gis, but if you buy a good quality gi you will find it holds up to the punishment pretty well. It takes a lot to damage a good quality gi and if you go to a good Judo school you will find plenty of ground fighting and standing. Just remember combat sports are a great way to start learning self defense, but they’re just the beginning of your training in self defense. On the street you don’t want to grapple and be rolling around on the ground. You want to strike first and strike hard and survive.
