Which Martial Art
Which martial art do I choose is a question that has been asked by potential students almost from the beginning of close combat history? Sometimes the choice was made for student because regional, cultural, or geographical factors played a role in what training was available to students. In some cases national pride prevented a style from being taught to students. Japan exported its two most popular styles for many years so people around the world would learn about Judo and Jujutsu, but countries like communist China greatly restrict the training it allows its people to have. Some styles might have been perfect for self defense in the past, but today are only suited for sports like Karate and Kung Fu. If you can find someone practicing true traditional versions of your favorite martial art seek them out so that you will learn real self defense. Which martial art is right for you all depends on what you want to get out of the experience.
If you have been sitting around watching Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on TV and you want to start training you can choose from many styles to train in for mixed martial arts tournaments. You might want to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or you can simple combine boxing and wrestling training. Also you can never go wrong with Judo for both fighting on the ground and standing. If you want to train in blade combat you might want to train in Eskrima which originated in the Philippians, and is a great cultural fighting art. Kendo will let you simulate samurai combat with bamboo swords and protective armor. If you want to break boards and learn how to strike you can try a number of different martial arts, but remember bricks don’t hit back so learn some real self defense training.
Which martial art to choose goes by what you want to get out of the experience? If you only want to lose weight know that what your probably be learning won’t be worth a damn in a fight. Most styles today are only sports and sports are only meant to be fun, and they won’t offer you any protection. Still if you are determines and train regularly you can still help yourself, but if you supplement your training with real combat martial arts you will be even better off. Which martial art is up to you.
