There are six primary styles and though an exact date is unknown it is believed that the primary styles date back to the early 1800’s.The Mandarin term “Tai Chi Chuan” translates as “supreme ultimate boxing,” though Tai Chi though you would never use it in the ring with another fighter. The creator is also in dispute, but Tai Chi’s borrows heavily from Taoism and other Chinese philosophies and religious practices. Known as “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi can be preformed anywhere and doesn’t require uniforms or equipment. The styles are done slowly and in repetition in an effort to heal the body.
Like many cultural fighting arts Tai Chi started off as self defense, but over time turned into a form of exercise that is good for stress reduction, improving balance, and agility. Tai Chi is a soft martial art where a defender uses an attacker’s energy and redirects them rather then attacking with brutal strikes and strangles. There is a lack of offensive moves though and as you will see when you look at a educational DVD it isn’t a form of self defense that can be learned quickly.
After viewing a Tai Chi DVD you may decide any system where it takes years for someone to learn self defense isn’t worth your time, or you might want a soft style where there is a reduced chance of injury. Enjoy Tai Chi and its health benefits, but remember it isn’t and option for self defense. Pickup a Tai Chi DVD and judge for yourself whether you want to train or not.
