Martial Art School

The martial art school is a place that is steeped in tradition, but at the same time is a lot of fun. You will make new friends and hopefully find a mentor for life and your favorite style. Like any school or workshop there are rules and customs that need to be followed. Regardless of whether a school teachers Korean, Chinese, Japanese or any other style they all share some common rules that cover everything from behavior to safety.

Socialize before and after class and try to be on time always. If there is a ritual at the beginning of classes don’t interrupt them if you come late. If you do come in just quietly wait for break to come in and join the class. Be polite respectful and attentive and follow the lead of more experienced students. When visiting a school other then your regular school follow the lead of others and stick to the general rules. Having a learning environment free of distractions allows students to be more productive. Leave your problems and your stress at the door and relax and enjoy your workout. Without honor and respect a martial arts school would not be different then a fight club in an alley.

The rituals in a martial arts school is not religious based so no one is violating any religious beliefs by taking part in these rituals. Bowing is simply a sign of respect to teachers and fellow students. Glancing up while bowing is a sign of lack of trust and disrespectful. Like with work or any other school a student is expected to arrive on time dressed and ready to begin class. Uniforms should be clean and the student should look presentable with long hair tied back and jewelry removed for safety reasons.

After you warm up and take care of any possible injury the class will train as a group, but there might be a lecture first. Every teacher is different, but most will show the move on a high ranking student while others watch and take questions at the end. When you start working out remember your partner is a fellow student and not an enemy. Your trying to learn not hurt others so gage your strength and work through any problems. When and doubt ask for help. A martial art school is a place to learn so give it your all.
