Martial Arts Accessories

Now it’s one thing to be proud that you’re a martial artist, but could we have a little modesty. Sure wearing a t-shirt or jacket of your school is cool, but things are getting to be over the top. It seems more people are interested in martial arts accessories than actually training in martial arts. The list of crap people seem to need is endless. Tiger fleeces for the bedroom, flags to hang up at the school, patches for uniforms, and even picture frames. There’s a ton of junk out there for you to buy if you’re obsessed with martial arts. Well, if you have more than two items having to do with martial arts in your house, and they have nothing to do with training – you need a reality check.

It’s easy to become a victim of martial arts accessories thanks to good intentioned friends and family. They find out that you teach or you workout a lot, and they feel you need t-shirts, coasters, and bath towels and god knows what else with your favorite martial arts style on them. They will hit you on every birthday holiday or promotion, and they seem to think you’ll never get tired of the stuff. Well, all these people love you so you don’t want to be mean about it, but if you don’t want a house that looks like a martial arts wholesaler’s warehouse you have to let them know. Be tactful and suggest other things and let them know not everything you own has to have martial arts on it. They will get the idea eventually.

To those of you who are buying all of this stuff for yourself get a handle on your spending already. You don’t need uniforms that are every color of the rainbow, and you’re not honoring great martial artists by having their bobble heads. Don’t buy weapons you don’t know how to use, and you don’t need a wallet that says what martial art you train in on it. Get a grip and start training more and don’t worry if your gym bag isn’t an “official” mixed martial arts bag. Show pride in your training and lifestyle, but also show some modesty. Show your pride by going to training regularly and being a mentor to others, and if someone asks you – tell them. Don’t be a walking billboard.
