Kung Fu Fighting

One of the ways martial arts have become part of popular culture is through music and most people know the song “Kung Fu Fighting”, performed by Carl Douglas, who intended it to be a tribute to the martial arts films of the day. Though Mr. Douglas only had this one hit before going into publishing you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard it. It has been covered many times since it came out in 1974, and it keeps showing up in martial arts themed movies and TV shows. It’s important to remember as a martial artist not to take yourself too seriously, and when the song comes on laugh about it like everyone else. The only problem is too many people see martial arts as a joke or only as a form of entertainment.

All kidding aside, real martial arts training is for self defense and sports martial arts are only to train us for battle. Now this might sound extreme to you, but there was a time when Kung Fu fighting was a deadly life or death struggle where you did anything you had to do to survive. Kung Fu is a general term for all Chinese martial arts, and many of the early styles came from Shaolin monks. The monks dedicated their lives to religious studies, meditation, and hard work. Even though they only wanted to live in peace, they knew others wouldn’t let them. They trained in many forms of martial arts – with and without weapons. Real Kung Fu fighting was all about practical self defense, and deadly force was used if it was necessary.

Sport combat sports are a type of game and games are meant to be fun. You should enjoy the competition, but when the fun and games are over it’s time for the real training. Don’t be satisfied with training that has you dancing around in funny costumes. That was never what martial arts training was intended to be. You shouldn’t train at a place that doesn’t know how to get serious. If you want to be really safe, learn self defense first then start learning Kung Fu or whatever style you want to learn. Once you’re safe you’ll have a lifetime to train and have fun. If you don’t, your first fight could be your last.
